More than 400 pet owners took part in our on-line survey. Commenting on everything from the cat’s top spot in the house to Fido’s favourite foods, here’s what you said.

  • 61% said their pet has helped them through major difficulties
  • 52% have discussed problems with their pet
  • 42% would turn to their pet when they are down in the dumps (compared to 36% turning to their lover and 22% turning to chocolate)

Pet owners can form an incredible bond with their pet. In many respects, this relationship can be likened to a human relationship but it’s amazing how many consider there to be added benefits. Pet relationships are considered completely reliable, our pets are faithful and don’t judge us. We can relax and open up with them no matter what the situation.

Pet owners are able to be themselves with their pet and have a freedom to express all types of emotions with the reward of unconditional love, gratitude, fun and affection.

What the vet says:
“We've known for ages that having a pet around makes you feel good. Pets make people smile and this is the basis for a number of health benefits that come from being around pets.

“Did you know it is estimated that pets save Australia an enormous $2.2 billion in reduced medical bills every year? Here are some of the reasons why:

1. Patting your pet leads to lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol, as reported by research from the Baker Institute in Melbourne.

2. People who are recovering from heart attack recover better and faster when they have a pet around as a friend.

3. Pets teach children the basics of being a good human - compassion, empathy and care for others.

4. Pets are great for mental health: your pet is always there for you. After a hard day at work, they are always waiting with an unconditional welcome and enduring love.

What you said
“My pets are what keep me sane otherwise I’d end up talking to the plants or garden statues.”

“I stopped dating a man I really liked because he turned his nose up at my cat.”

“I love my cat more than my boyfriend and my boyfriend knows that.”

“My dog Gus is my world and as a single woman he is one of the most important relationships I have.”

“Sumo knows when I need cheering up. It’s amazing how intuitive pets are.”

“You can talk as much as you want and they won’t interrupt.”

“My pet has been the most patient listener and devoted friend since my kids left home.”

“She saw me through bowel cancer and all my ups and downs…I couldn’t wish for a better friend.”

“He does not judge me when he sees me naked and does not think my bum looks big in anything.”
