So you made the mistake of catching a ride with Gilligan and the Skipper and ended up on a deserted island. You may be waiting for a rescue for some time, so what would be the top six gadgets you need to keep you busy until your rescue ship arrives?
1. Solar powered laptops
First unveiled in 2006 by computer maker MSI, and mass produced by Quanta Computer in 2007 for the global One Child, One Laptop project, these units literally never run out of power. Imagine, with all that spare time, you could write a novel, or even a series of novels, or your version of Robinson Crusoe. OK, maybe you won't have an Internet connection, but at least you won’t end up with all that spam and junk mail.
2. Powermonkey solar recharger
Coming with a solar slave, the powermonkey is an excellent product to have on a deserted island (as long as you are in the topics). This is the device that powers up all your other devices and you don't need a battery! Sure, it might take a while to charge up the gear, but after all, it's not like you are going anywhere.
3. iPod
With 160GB of storage, Apple’s iPod classic can hold up to 40,000 songs, 200 hours of video, or 25,000 photos, which is just as well, as it would probably take a year or two to get through all this stored media. In fact, the battery will run out before you get through all your songs, but the Powermonkey will be on hand to power it up again.
4. GPS module
Your rescuers may not know where you are, but with the latest Navman, TomTom, Uniden, Garmin or Mio GPS, at least you will. These Global Positioning Satellite receivers are known to be accurate to within half a metre, which is incredible when you think they are using a satellite hundreds of kilometres above the Earth to get your coordinates. It will help you avoid those unseen bluffs and rugged terrain when you go out hunting for your food.
5. Hand crank radio
This is a radio that is powered by muscle power rather than batteries or electricity. Turning the crank winds the spring, and a full winding will allow several hours of operation. Initially developed in the mid 90s for the poor masses of Africa, this would be an invaluable source of information for those stuck on a deserted island.
6. Solar-powered BBQ
OK, you might be stuck on your island, but you have to eat. And a solar-powered BBQ is just the thing you will need to turn that fish, pig or crab you just caught into a delicious meal. This device uses a curved mirror acting as a parabolic reflector, which focuses the rays of the sun onto a point where the food is heated, and of course, you’ll never run out of gas.
