Scallion
Question
I was recently searching through some recipes and one of the ingredients was "scallion". What is this and where I can buy it?
Lana, via e-mail

Answer
Scallion is just one of the many names for an immature onion picked before the bulb has formed. It has a long, bright-green edible stalk with a distinctive sweet onion-flavour. It's sold under different guises from Sydney to San Francisco, so you might find it called anything from green onion to spring onion to shallot.

Scallions are readily available at supermarkets, fruit and vegie shops and fresh produce markets, so you shouldn't have any trouble sourcing this useful ingredient.
