Are our fruit and veg less nutritious now than 20 years ago?

, Prev Next

We are so lucky in Australia to be able to enjoy fabulous fruit and veg in season, but have you heard people say that the fruit and veg we eat today is not as nutritious as 20 years ago? Well, our national food regulatory body has put this notion to the test. So, what did it find?

A study by Food Standards Australia and New Zealand analysed the mineral content of 44 common fruits and vegetables. It evaluated the potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc contents of these foods in the early 2000s compared to the early 1980s. They confirmed that despite some minor variances, there was no significant difference in the mineral content.

While further research would be helpful to understand whether there are major differences in the vitamin content of fruit and veg, we can be quite confident in the mineral content of today's fruit and veg. So, based on current knowledge there is no need to supplement our diet.

How to get the most from fruit and veg

Go seasonal. Choose fruit and veg that are in season. This means the time spent in commercial storage, and any potential nutrient loss, is minimised.

Go for variety. Aim for a rainbow of coloured fruit and vegetables in your meals. You'll be getting a broad range of health-promoting nutrients if you do.

Buy it regularly. Try buying fresh seasonal fruit and veg a couple of times a week. It's better to buy less and use it all, than have soggy produce by the end of the week.

Make it convenient. Frozen vegetables can be a convenient alternative to fresh. Just use them within six months of purchase, and don't let them thaw before cooking.

Go light. Lightly cook vegies to help minimise nutrient loss during cooking. Microwaving, steaming and stir-frying are best.

Creative focus. Make fruit and veg the focus of as many of your meals as possible.

Your say: Do you think fruit and vegetables are less nutritious now than in our parents' time?

User comments
we now have an abundance of synthetic fertilizers that give the plant it's meager NPK requirement for it to grow fast, but micro nutrients aren't added back to soil to compensate for produce leaving pasture, continuously cropped soils are completely devoid of zinc, and low in many trace elements, and food is transported further, so fruit is picked 'green' higher in salicylates, and lower in vitamines, the lack of flavour is also an indication of being ow in minerals.
