After-work healthy

, Prev Next Photographer: Brett Stevens. Stylist: Michaela le Compte Snapper with spicy tomato sauce

We've just brought out our latest mini cookbook, After-work Healthy, containing 70 fantastic triple-tested recipes. The book is available in supermarkets and newsagents, and it sells for the incredibly low price of $5.20. My advice is grab one — we know they're selling fast.

The recipes in this book have been specially designed for time-poor people — that's most of us these days. Almost all of the recipes can be whipped up in time to have the meal on the table in 30 minutes — even less in some cases. The added bonus is, the recipes are not full of fat and kilojoules, they're good, nutritionally sound recipes which contain lots of fresh ingredients without being boring.

Try and resist the temptation to pick up or order in takeaway food after a busy day. Usually it's high in fat and kilojoules and certainly not healthy. It's expensive as well, not only to your pocket, but to your health. Get a bit organised, think about what the next week holds for you (the cook) and have a pretty good idea of what meals you're going to have time to prepare after a busy day.

Make a shopping list, buy everything you possibly can before your week starts, try and avoid dropping into shops on the way home to pick up the odd forgotten ingredient. Not only is this time-wasting, but, you're bound to be tempted to buy something extra — probably something that's not too good for your health or budget.

Think about this, we humans seem to crave foods which contain a lot of fat and salt, or fat and sugar (think chocolate). We love the smell of these foods and, you can bet if you love the smell, you're going to love the taste even more.

But, if you're completely honest with yourself after eating a high-fat meal (think deep-fried fish and chips) you might feel "full" but not necessarily "good" about what you've just eaten. However, if you eat a piece of grilled fish with green vegies, salad or coleslaw and some oven-baked potato chunks, you will feel like you've had a "clean" meal and will be all the better for it.

Now, go and buy our mini cookbook, work out a simple meal plan for a busy week, make a shopping list and stick to it — it's a win-win situation.

Hi, I've just bought the new 'low-fat delicious' cookbook and AWW Sept 2009 because I've seen some really great recipes in there. The recipes are fab although I was very disappointed to find Julie Goodwin in it, dishing up yet another boring menu. I am from Singapore originally so I know lots of good exotic food and living in England over 10 years, I can assure you Poh should have been in your magazine dishing up exotic Malaysian cuisine, she's innovative too! One glance at Julie's menu, I yawned yet again, same old potato and meat Marlaky, so disappointing!! I am a great cook, I can do them in my sleep many years ago. Now, we need more innovative exotic food instead of boring meat and potato dish anyone can dish out at home anytime. Anyway, I thought of getting a refund for my mag but then again, there were quite a few good recipes from other 'real' chefs I want to try out. I won't be buying this mag again though, 8 of my girlfriends share the same thoughts BTW.
