NZFW - Juliette Hogan and Annah Stretton

, Prev Next Behind-the-scenes at Annah Stretton. Photography by Guy Coombes

Annah Stretton
When a man sitting in the front row starts describing the collection as "just a bunch of jackets with knickers", you know it probably won't translate into the most wearable collection of the week.

Annah Stretton's show started with film images of its inspiration, Freda Stark, a gold-painted, risqué dancer of the '40s. Models sauntered out in jackets, coats and dresses worn over exposed vintage inspired lingerie, bodysuits and suspenders.

There was the usual Annah Stretton ruching, soft lace, ruffled trims and some sharply cut tweed coats and herringbone jackets. The palette was muted, with plenty of nudes, a plethora of florals and a dash of leopard print all mixed together with a recurring fur gilet.

The result? A va-va-voom factor that's hard to ignore; if you're brave enough to venture back into the sexually charged '40s, these are pieces that will take you dancing with friends until the early morning.

Juliette Hogan
Juliette Hogan had a hit on her hands last autumn, so why mess with a good thing? Tweaking the fabrics and the colour palette, she sent out another wearable collection of soft, simple, body-loving draped dresses.

She explained that she was inspired "by the idea of 'bookish beauty'", namely — from the looks of things — a sense of ladylike primness which has been lost among all the '80s-structured shoulders and Balmain studs of late.

Hogan's decorous dresses have a weightless, easy appeal. There were soft bow blouses, billowing pleated chiffon dresses and sheer floral prints all in her signature muted pastel tones. These were mixed and matched with hints of olive and deep purple, creating a mannered style fit for afternoon tea with girlfriends or a summer garden party.

Juliette Hogan isn't a household name here, yet, but with her girlish silhouette and polished looks, there's certainly enough here to lock in the growing number of Hoganettes of all ages.

Juliette Hogan is not yet stocked in Australia. Email: shop@juliettehogan.com for more information
