Fact or fad: the truth about 'quick-fix' diets

, Prev Next The old saying "if it seems too good to be true it probably is" can be applied to almost all of the quick-fix diets that pop up in the media and in bestselling books. Excess body weight doesn't appear overnight — and it won't disappear that quickly either.

Fad diets are often popular because of the quick weight loss you may experience in the first few weeks, but this gradually slows over time. In reality this initial weight loss is mostly due to the loss of glycogen (stored energy in muscles) and water, not fat, so as soon as you start to eat "normally" again, the weight comes back, usually with a few more kilos than you had originally.

Fad diets are often nutritionally inadequate, which can lead to more serious health complications. And while on the subject of quick fixes, there is also little evidence supporting the benefit of non-prescription weight-loss pills or supplements.

So what can you do? It sounds simple, however evidence shows that there are three common habits amongst people who successfully lose weight:

  1. eating less fat;
  2. monitoring food intake (often with the use of a food diary); and
  3. increasing physical activity levels.

The approach to weight control in children is a little different to that for adults. Children need to be taught healthy eating habits from an early age, and physical activity should be strongly encouraged. If you need to make changes to your child's diet, try to have them adopted by the whole family. Encourage positive changes with praise and non-food rewards.

Remember, successful, long-term weight loss requires adopting healthy lifestyle habits that you and your family can maintain for the rest of your lives. There are no "quick fixes". Let us know what you think.

I do believe that portion control as well as excercise is a great way to maintain a healthy weight. I also know that our body needs vitamins and nutrients that we cant find in our foods that we get at the food stores.The process it takes to get to us from the farms around the world,chemicals that are use to treat pesticides on them causes alot of health problems. It would be of our best interest to investigate some companies that are associated with a scientific team of doctors that are regulated by the FDA and is associated with credited universities like UCLA. you can do this research from www.bestherbalifeonline.com
I just wanted to thank the AWW and their lovely food editors for the 21 Day Wonder Diet book! I have been sharing these meals with my husband and daughters over the last 3 weeks (the 21 days ends tomorrow) and I have lost almost 5 kg in that time (despite numerous interruptions). The recipes have moved us out of a food rut - and the bonus is that they are delicious and nutritious. Our favourite breakfast is now the home made cranberry muesli, to our surprise! We love the plan so much that we will be starting the 3 weeks all over again, just as the editors did. I liked the structured eating plan that didn't require thought or point counting or hours in the kitchen. The shopping lists were great, and the daily journals from the editors were a nice touch. The recipes were quick and easy. And we have developed an appreciation of flavours that don't come from fat, sugar and salt. Thanks AWW!!
