Hooked on fish

, Prev Next Chilli salt prawns from Hooked on Fish

Seafood of all types — including canned and smoked — is incredibly beneficial to everyone's health and wellbeing. It should be included in everyone's diet at least twice a week, more often is even better.

Just like fruit and vegies, if a certain type of fish is in season and plentiful, it's going to be cheaper and almost certainly better than fish that is out of season.

Have a chat to your local fishmonger to find out what seafood is in season, and experiment with different types, especially fish. Ask about the best cooking method to use (most good fishmongers have this information) then, cook the fish simply so you can really taste the flavour and check out the texture.

Next time you buy that type of fish, try adding some different flavours. Maybe try a lovely salsa, or some Thai ingredients, or just a dob of herb-flavoured butter. Have a look at our latest cookbook called Hooked on Fish (available at newsagents and some supermarkets for $19.95) for some fantastic recipe ideas.

Sometimes it's tricky to persuade kids to eat seafood. But just last week I cooked my version of fish fingers for my two granddaughters and they ate every last crumb.

I cut the fish into large fish-finger shapes, egg and breadcrumbed them using the Japanese panko breadcrumbs bought from the supermarket. Then I pan-fried the fish in a little olive oil. I did some oven-roasted potatoes (their favourite) as well, and everyone was happy.
