Forgot your PIN? Entered a room, only to realise you have no idea what you went in there for? The scariest thing about lapses like these is that they start happening long before you're due for senior-citizen discounts.

The good news is that even if your memory is dodgy, you can strengthen it in the same way you tone your body — by doing a daily work-out.

Physical and mental jogging goes well together, according to a study from the University of Kentucky in the United States. Researchers administered memory tests to adults, then put one-third of them on a low-key exercise program consisting of a short daily walk. After just two weeks, the exercisers tested between 15 and 30 percent higher on recall and information processing.

"Exercise increases oxygen and sugar available to the brain, which produces new brain cells and repairs fraying myelin (the fatty sheath that protects nerve cells)," study director Dr Kathleen Blomquist said.

Here are five fun exercises to help boost your brain power, before you even think about getting physical as well:

  1. Item recall. List 10 items you might pick up at a supermarket. Study the list for five minutes. Put it aside and see how many items you can remember immediately, then how many items you can recall in 30 minutes. Three items is the average, but you should be able to work up to 10 in a week.
  2. Name sequence. Have someone read you a list of five first and last names. Concentrate on absorbing them. Have the first names read back to you, out of sequence. How many matching last names can you recall? The average is two. You should be able to increase your total to five with daily practise.
  3. Number association. Numbers are an abstract concept; so you need a mental "hook" to hang them on. By giving each number a sound and visual representation (eg: one=gun, two=shoe, three=knee, etc), you create a picture that comes readily to mind. Practise number and picture linking, then test your recall of the missing number while reviewing the images.
  4. Phone recall. Make a list of imaginary (or real) long-distance or mobile telephone numbers, then (using a disconnected phone!), practise dialling them in sequence, without referring to the list. Most of us have trouble recalling numbers of nine digits or more; again, this ability should start to improve after a week's daily practise.
  5. Faces and names. To make a name meaningful, pick a person's outstanding feature and attach a mental image to it (eg: the name "Fleming" might bring "flaming" to mind; and if the man you're talking to has a moustache, you might link the two for recall as "flaming moustache"). Using the name during the initial encounter, as soon and as often as you can, and using it again when saying goodbye helps to reinforce recall.

To further preserve your brain: Eat wholefoods with less starch and sugar (even slightly elevated blood-sugar levels can damage the brain); take at least 1000mg of fish oil or flaxseed oil daily (a source of omega-3 fatty acids which reduces the risk of Alzheimer's disease). Try herbal mind-enhancers like ginkgo, which improves blood supply to the brain, and gotu kola, a neural tonic that builds mental stamina.

Learn to meditate (ongoing stress results in a continuous supply of cortisol, which interferes with short- and long-term memory retrieval). And keep your brain active with stimulating activities like reading or doing craft; one study found that recreational pursuits like these halved the risk of developing memory loss.

Lisa, you are one part of a fabulous team and I love the way you come over as an 'equal' or dare I say 'one of the boys'. They (the boys) need you and the other girls to keep the show real. I love your wicked sense of humour. Getting up at 3am each day must be hard especially when the rest of family don't have to. Sorry to hear you were bullied at school. Wonder if that 'new girl' will read your story and maybe send you an apology. Do you ever wonder where she is now because she and others sure know where you are now.
Yes, exercise does assist with Healthy Body and Brain functioning. For an amazing brain exercise functioning I would highly reccomend the traditional yoga relaxation method now re-recorded and available by contacting the natural therapy pages by going to Hatha Yoga style at Carindale Brisbane and send Sue a message and she will send you relevant info.
I am 75 years old. I keep my brain active by reading good books, browsing items of interest on the internet, doing crosswords, puzzles, quizzes etc. But the most stimulating of all is having an interesting conversation with someone who is reasonably articulate. I keep in contact with people via email, in which we are not afraid to express our opinions, and partake in such things as "your say". I switch on to TV programs like the Seven Thirty Report, Q & A, Parliament Question Time, and documentaries on all types of topics. You can learn something new no matter how old you are. I have always believed that you learn far more after leaving school than you ever did while at school, providing you have an enquiring mind. Good schooling plays a very big part in the way you will continue to learn afterwards. Nothing can take the place of observing the way students behave in public and the way they speak as an indication as to the kind of education they are receiving.
"health" - 53 yrs old and a complete moron. why do you spell like a 10 year old? "if U don't UR body will..." that would be "if YOU don't YOUR body will..." And 'peace'? Come on! act your age. It's not 'cool' to pretend to be a kid. It's sick
I will be 63yo on 26th december. As far as food consumption goes my husband and I really take care of what we eat and drink minimising bad foods and optimising good fresh foods. My husband takes natural vitamins and joint remedies while I am stuck with prescribed medications for several conditions as well as non-addictive pain killers. My husband walks the dog every day for about an hour while I am unable to exercise because of spinal problems. We believe diet and exercise are certainly important aspects of maintaining brain power however medications and pain can cause deterioration of recall. I have a Honours Degree in Linguistics and read, do crosswords, and word puzzles without clues my favourite but sometimes when relaying a story to friends I lose the name of something or a person and so I look to my husband to fill in for me. This scares me as my late father suffered from Multi Infarct Dementia owing to Emphysemia that diminished his air supply.
at least you jog
Something I do is take Brahma and Ginko... helps with memory and reduces stress ... great for kick starting your memory and relaxing you as you work a high pressure million mile an hour job. Definently exercise! Great for the moosh in your head! Puts you on the ball ... so to speak
I have read a lot about boosting your brain so that it continues to work as it should. I totally agree with the comments in the article. I have tried them and they work. The only thing is that you need to remember to keep doing them.Like physical exercise....you tend to start feeling better and then forget to keep at it.
strong, happy, healthy 53year old. To my mind, minerals r the key, via kelp(seaweed). if u dont ur body takes minerals from u( bones & teeth). eat fruit, vegetables, fish, plenty water, +kelp & watch health happen. + add your own belief on life. peace.
I am 61 and luckily dont look it, I have some osteoarthritis and other helath problems but I gave up my car 3 yrs ago, and walk everywhere and use public transport, luckily I live where I can gt a bus almost anywhere. I am a very hand-son grandma also and do craft, painting, stories, computer, games, cards and lots of cooking with them, and this keeps me fit and healthy in the mind, if not a bit tired. I am a great believer in keeping active so do volunteering, and do courses and anything to keep learning. Once we stop learning, we may as well give up I say. Get involved I say, with the world around you, and the people around you, even if it is a daily walk to the shops or shopping centre, to interact with others. Loneliness can kill you mentally and emotionally, but it is in each of us to try and take the first step towards that. If you are housebound, seek help and you will be suprised as to home visitors that could be arranged for company. Despite my aches and pains, life is good
