As parents there are various ways you can have a positive impact on your children's long-term eating behaviours. We've come up with some key ways in which you can help establish healthy habits for life. We'd also love to hear any tips you may have.

Set an example. As parents, you will need to set the example as your children will model their eating behaviour from you. If your kids don't see you enjoying a balanced diet — it will be much more difficult for you to convince them they should eat well!

Remember, eating habits established as a child are carried throughout life! Enjoy meal times together and try and involve your children in meal preparation whether it is the shopping, washing, peeling or cooking. Kids are more likely to eat what they have helped prepare.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle for life. Consciously thinking about your child's food choices and also the meals you, as a parent, prepare is an important step in encouraging healthy, nutritious food choices in your own home. Paired with you, as a parent, setting a good example, you will assist your children to develop healthy habits for life. Remember, eating habits established as a child are carried throughout life.

Encourage variety. A healthy diet is vital for children of all ages from toddlers to teenagers, especially during periods of rapid growth. To give children the best start to living a healthy lifestyle, it is important to introduce a wide variety of food from all the food groups to establish a good nutritional foundation.

Enjoy meal times together, in a relaxed, enjoyable manner. This becomes a key time to catch up on each family member's daily events.

Don't exclude sweets and higher fat snacks all together. Instead, offer them as "sometimes" foods rather than an everyday option. This will teach your children the importance of balanced eating and "everything in moderation".

Be a role model. Demonstrate how being active is fun and can be incorporated into your family's everyday life.

Remember, if it is in the house — it will be eaten! As parents you can control what is in the pantry or refrigerator.

When my daughter was growing up we always had meals at the table together including breakfast. As a sole parent, sitting with a 5 year old after a long day at work can be boring at times...so I took the emphasis off the food..and often we had flash cards that we played while we ate this enabled us to chat away and laugh. There was never an issue with 'likes' in food..always 'how do you know if you haven't tried' with a laugh. Often I would have 'tastings'..which apple do you like better...can you tell which tomato was bought at the super market and which from the neighbor's garden..all good fun. Today my 21 year old craves raw veggies ('how could anyone not like the crispness, the freshness and the fact there is little preparation'?) salad without dressing is her 'heaven food' and really good bread as well. As the parent, I made sure there was never an issue about food..worked around it..help in cooking, help in choices. Today she is a real fresh 'foodie' with a superb palate.
1. Don't refer to the occasional sweet as a "special treat". Perhaps refer to seasonal fruit as a "special treat" because these fruits are not around all year. 2. Teach your children how to select ripe fruit and vegetables at the super market. eg if a cucumber is soft at the ends, don't buy it. 3. Comment on the great taste of healthy foods. Children will respond to your reaction. 4. Buy your children a recipe book and have them select one meal each week, which they can help prepare. This can even be as simple as smoothies for everyone. 5. Presentation counts - Pack carrot sticks, dried fruit etc in a small celophane bag in children's lunch boxes with a sticker to fasten. Both bags and stickers can be purchased in bulk from large newsagencies. The children can prepare these the night before and place in the fridge.
It is also good to get kids to grow their own vegies, if they grow them themselves they are more likely to eat them. I caught my son out at the vegie patch one day, hooking into the beans, he wouldn't eat vegies at meal times but when I stopped cooking them he loved them, (maybe it was just my cooking!) They are better for them raw and you can put companion plants around (eg basil) to deter bugs so you don't have to spray them.
