When compared to the UK, USA and China, the levels of obesity in Australian women is rising faster than in other countries, Sydney's Daily Telegraph reported.

Research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that the top five percent of obese women in Australia at age 30 have an average BMI of 37.7. In America the top five percent of women at the same age have an average BMI of 42.5. Australian women are fast catching up to American obesity levels for the first time ever.

The World Health Organization states that those with a body mass index (BMI) figure of more than 34.9 are critically obese. BMI is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in metres squared.

Experts believe that women gain weight gradually and do not notice their weight creeping up. Women have a tendency to gain extra weight once they turn 30 due to lifestyle changes, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Though health professionals have known that women have been putting on more weight than men over the past decade, the study has still alarmed them.

Experts are warning women not to become complacent with their increasing weight.

"What we have known is that for the past five years, people have been gaining weight and they are women aged between 25 and 35," the University of Sydney's Boden Professor of Human Nutrition, Professor Ian Caterson, told Sydney's Daily Telegraph.

I've been going to the gym since I was 19, I'm now 29 and still go 4-5 times a week, and love exercising - some days are harder than others, but I generally fit in about 2 hours of exercise every day, and rotate it between weights, cardio, yoga and team sports. When I turned 27 I noticed that I couldn't eat what I wanted anymore. I'm 5'9" and weigh 67kg, I put on 3 kg when I turned 27 after a long stint traveling, and it just doesn't want to go away! I've also been following a gluten free lifestyle for the past 6 months, and still no change - sometimes you're body just wants to be what it wants to be. I don't eat *** food, I drink moderately, and not nearly as much as I did a year ago, and I work out regulary - I may be considered plumper than others - but I think people need to stop judging each other - you can leada horse to water, but you can't make it drink!
Ricki Lee is not fat. She is healthy. Some people's body shapes are naturally 'curvier' than others.
The problem is society I agree... Us Australians do drink a lot. Cutting down alcohol or cutting it out completely does wonders. I think the main problem here is obviously fast food. For example subways low calorie subs are still quite high in calories. Then people add salt, sauces, extra toppings etc. Then there is a whopper from Hungry Jacks which is close to 700 calories. Just the burger alone. People are eating these and so are their kids. And we wonder why we need a new catergory for the obese which is called super obese. Vegies are low in calories. That's the secret. Well it's not a secret, it's a fact. A good free website for calories is www.calorieking.com.au
This is gonna sound awful but......finally someone is pionting out the fact that aussie womens weight is an issue!! I'm sick and tired of us being told " the average size 14" is ok! Just because other people are overweight doesn't mean you have to be. And just because the average size is a 14 doesn't mean that it's healthy. At a size 12 and 167 cm I was considered overweight by industry standard....so I got off my fat *** and did something! There I said it!
I was at a 18+ festival in Brisbane a couple of months ago where there were people whose ages ranged from 18 - approx mid 50's. Of the people over 30 about 80% of them were slim or only mildly overweight, of the people under 30.....MOST of them were signifigantly overweight or obese!!!! It was a real eye opener.
Australians drink like fish without considering health implications and then eat rubbish food which contribute to the unhealthy lifestyle. So long as we abuse alcohol our waistlines are going to continue expanding rapidly.
It's usually a taboo subject with my friends and those who I counsel so I am glad this study has come to light. Where I live most women are quite large, far more so than the men in this town. Many of the teenage girls are likewise large, but I do note a degree of laziness involved. I've heard said from many women that their partner does not find them attractive anymore and they replied with, "But you have to love me how I am." Love may not change with weight but desire does which causes other problems in a relationship. And then we must consider the health of people who are growing very large. I would hope we could see a return to how we were up to the 60's and 70's where the majority of people were healthy, slim and vital. Perhaps it is the fast food syndrome in which it is easier to purchase than to cook, and it costs about the same for a week. So I am not saying men should not also look to their health and body shape as many men are overweight too.
Women need to take responsibility for themselves - single, in a couple, with children or without. It is about choices and no matter what anyone says you DO have time in your day to make responsible choices about what you put in your mouth and the movements you make for your body. I have been overweight, watched my mother struggle with her weight my entire life - and I decided not to have that same struggle. I made the decision years ago to make responsible, healthy choices and it is a priority in my life. The only person that can make that change is YOU! Caring for your body and your health is like breathing - you must do it naturally. There is no "being good" or being bad" to have that mentality is so negative and if you are wanting to lead a healthy lifestyle that is a postive step forward. To make changes you need to step up and take responsibility for yourself. It's like getting a new job, having a child - unless you go through the process it's not going to happen.
Women are becoming more obese because some idiot decided the norm for the modern day woman is a size 14-16.
What do expect when you have rival magazines promoting fatties like Ricki-Lee and Casey Donovan and their 'killer curves'. What a joke. Slim down ladies, stop making excuses and hit the gym. Your boyfriends and hubbies would love you for it.
