We all know that loneliness is not good for the soul, but new research suggests that it can be bad for your body too. Lack of contact with others can actually increase your blood pressure if you are over 50 years of age.

Psychologists at the University of Chicago have found a direct correlation between loneliness and increases in blood pressure, a link that was independent of factors including age, whether a subject smoked, were obese or suffered from depression and stress, the UK's Daily Telegraph reported.

"Loneliness behaved as though it is a unique health-risk factor in its own right," researcher Dr Louise Hawkley wrote in the journal Psychology and Ageing.

As part of a long-term study on ageing, Dr Hawkley and her team asked 229 people aged 50 to 68 a set of questions to determine if they thought of themselves as lonely.

Respondents were asked to rate their acceptance of statements such as, "I have a lot in common with the people around me"; "My social relationships are superficial"; and "I can find companionship when I want it".

Over a five-year period, the team found a clear connection between loneliness and rising blood pressure.

"The increase associated with loneliness wasn't observable until two years into the study, but then continued to increase until four years later," Dr Hawkley said.

While all levels of loneliness were reflected in higher blood pressure, the loneliest people in the group saw their blood pressure rise more than 10 percent more than their most sociable peers.

There is a suggestion that apprehension about not having friends or partners might be the root of the blood pressure rise.

Lifeline: If you are feeling depressed or lonely, you can speak to someone who cares

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a risk factor in coronary heart disease, stroke, heart failure, peripheral vascular disease and renal failure.

The latest figures show that 3.7 million Australians suffer from the condition, including 32 percent of men and 27 percent of women over the age of 25.

Perhaps (most certainly) I've truly lost the plot, but I can never remember being "lonely" until my mother died in 2001 and my subsequent retirement from the workforce in 2002. Being the last born of 5 children I always felt "alone" until the birth of my daughter in 1989 who gave me a reason to be. Be that as it is, I am now lonely and have a need to speak with people other than family. So...one distances oneself over time due to work committments, home duties and all other things. Everything drifts away. I now live alone...and it seems that all those hectic years of work, cooking, cleaning, "making house" , mean nothing. "I am a Rock, I am an Island" (Simon and Garfunkel & a poet whose name I can't remember) doesn't really describe "aloneness".
Yes really think that being alone affects our health, I have been on my own for almost four years, and when Im not dating or hanging out with friends and family, I slowly start to feel depleted and depressed, I have more time off work, due to sickness
"aloneness" is not necessarily "loneliness". They say , loneliness is purely a state of mind. The loneliest people can sometimes be those with the most social contacts.
Hi Blue and Bluer, if your feeling like your in a really dark place right now, why dont you go to a spiritual person and get a reading done, its very healing and you'll be quiet suprised with what you'll here - I guarantee it!
I can definately say depression is a big factor over blood pressure. Im physically healthy, but do get depression sometimes. Ive been solitary for 15 years, Im 39. I think that stems from being abandon as a teenager. Ive done alot of soul searching, Im happy with who I am. I just cant handle drama. Id rather be on my own than with someone who is insecure and creates dramas. Friends come and go and I find people dont put any effort into friendships anymore like they use to. Technology ruined that. Its most important for people to be on there own for sometime, but being on your own for a year or two is not certainly not loneliness. Speaking from experience.
Loneliness is a cruel disease-it can make people do things they wouldnt normally do !
I have lived alone for almost 30yrs, but the only time I ever felt truly lonely was when I was married.
i've read all of the above comments and it really depends on one's perception of what it is to be lonely. As human beings we all need human connection and interaction, however there is nothing wrong with sometimes feeling alone. It happens to everyone... what's the pressure? I'd rather be alone, than with a person who disrespected me and made my life miserable. Loneliness at some point can be controlled. ..Join a club... volunteer to do community work etc etc.. it's not always about finding a soul mate, and feeling like a failure if you don't.
what is lonenly? people wake up!!!!! never let you think that you're lonely and be gladd you have no sadle on your back, every one thinks and talks about freedom and yet most of you want to be ensklaved by someone. isint that the common brain wash ever inplanted in the society? have a partener!!!!! have babyes!!!!!! have a dog- cat- a woolf- a snake- and so on not to be loneny. what a crappppppp, my heart works lake a klock no high sugar no high b.p. and no stress. I am free alone and luckyyyyyyyyyy!!!! many are jelous of my freedom, but say they can not escape to freedom. I never think of lonelynes
To the casual observer I would appear to have a normal lifestyle with a circle of friends. This couldn't be further from the truth. I work in a busy office with dozens of people but they are work associates....not friends. I have family but not close by so while we talk regularly on the phone they are not close by for comfort. I live with my youngest daughter but she has her own life and, while we are close and are best friends.....she is perhaps my only friend. Yes I am extremely lonely. I often go home at night and, if my daughter is out, I sometimes sit and cry simply because I long for contact with another person. I would give anything to have someone walk up and give me a hug. Am I unhealthy? No I'm not but god I'm miserable. Before someone else says it, NO I'm not suicidal or anything.....I'M JUST LONELY!!
