If you're trying to have a baby, it might be a good idea to keep an eye on your partner's cola intake, as a Danish researchers have found that big cola drinkers can have sperm counts up to 30 percent lower than normal.

Researchers at Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen University Hospital, were looking for a link between caffeine and male fertility but found lower sperm counts were not the result of the caffeine in cola, as was previously thought, PhysOrg.com reported.

The researchers studied sperm samples taken from 2554 young men during their physical examinations for Danish military service between 2001 and 2005. The men were also surveyed regarding their intake of caffeine from various sources, including cola, and asked questions about their lifestyle and diet.

Results showed that those with low to moderate total caffeine intake and cola consumption (up to 800mg per day caffeine and up to 14 500ml bottles of cola per week) didn't display any lowering of sperm count. But those with a high intake of caffeine and cola (more than 800mg per day and more than 14 500ml bottles a week) did show a lower sperm count, although the figure was only significant for those who drank a lot of cola.

The 93 men who drank a litre or more of cola a day displayed a much lower count.

The study, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology last month, found no link between caffeine from tea or coffee and lower sperm count. But researchers could not separate a possible ingredient of cola being the key driver from other lifestyle factors (such as not exercising or eating enough fruit), which are characteristic of people who drink a lot of cola.

Your say: Do you think that too much cola could affect a man's sperm count or that a generally unhealthy lifestyle could be equally important? Share your thoughts below.

Hmmm, pregnant in 3 weeks after mucho cola? Are you sure the kid is his?
Considering my bf drinks 2+ Litres of cola a day and he got me pregnant in a 3 week period.. I'd be thinking it's not because of the caffine lol.
hmm... maybe they are not your kids after all then, paying any maintenence? 1 acronym for you... DNA
If you research a little more into it and use a little common sense, it can be observed that men (and women) who drink a lot of coke or other soft drinks tend to have not-so-healthy eating habbits and possibly lifestyles also. Therefore, cola along with an unhealthy lifestyle will lead to lower sperm counts. NOTE - This does not mean the man is infertile.
Personally I think everyone is different. Cola makes for lower fertility? Maybe in some. Smoking kills? yes, in some. I have an 90 year old relative living with me. he smokes all day. yeah, it may kill him (one day). I exercise 6 days a week. I don't drink coke at all. I don't smoke. Don't take drugs. I have one child and spent 11 years trying for a second child. makes sense!
Ok...I admit, I'm a 2 coffee morning, 1.8Ltr water mid morning, and a 2-3 can diet coke lunch + afternoon + another 1ltr water at least, man.....so...im addicted.....but how bad is bad? If I cut it out...headaches, irritability, lethargy ..etc....and heck I’ve tried and then im a 6 ltr water a day man....and heck this doesn’t even count roughly another 1ltr soda water at night on top of the above. Sure I try only 1 coffee and 1 can, but im weak and it only lasts a day or two, then a bad day at work...or a double shift can just through out the willpower....at least its not booze every day *chuckle*.... Am I a risk?
Actually, my loser bogan ex drank a litre of Coke a day EASILY, sometimes more than two! I agree that the method of obtaining this knowledge is a little on the seedy side though and that they should do another, more targeted, study. My ex was concerned that pot smoking was lowering his sperm count...if only he'd known he was putting himself through a double whammy of bad habits that were potentially killing off his little swimmers, hahahahaha!! I hope the *** figures it out AFTER he tries to have kids...might be karma's way of teaching him that treating me like an ATM, slave and verbal punching bag was wrong!
gp_26, it is quite feasible to drink that much coke a day, i used to drink between 3 and 4 litres per week day easy. and more on weekends.
hi i would have to agree with this study. this is the first ive heard of it and it makes perfect sence! my partner and i have been trying to have a baby for almost 3 years now and there is no reason why we cant conceieve, its just not happening!!! my partner was a coke (cola) addict he drank on adverage a 2ltr bottle a day, more if he was drinking bourbon. about a month ago we decided to stop drinking coke, we now drink water or cordial, i have to agree with "people think there experts" i feel healthy and have more energy! i think that it should be banned, there is more health risks than benefits! and i would also like to know if the effect are reversable or if the damage is done its done? we really want our baby!
i drink 6 cans of coke a day, and have 6 different kids from 6 different women. not a coincidence in my opinion.
