More than half of the nation is not healthy, with 54 percent weighing in at an overweight or obese level, but one in six obese Australians believe their weight is in the healthy weight range, a new study had found.

Researchers commissioned by the Heart Foundation and insurer Zurich interviewed 1200 respondents aged 20 and over on the telephone, using self-reported data.

The Heart Foundation says one of the most worrying outcomes of the study was that "obesity is somewhat normalising".

CEO of the Heart Foundation, Dr Lyn Roberts, said that Australians are putting themselves at risk of heart disease because they are unaware of what to do to meet healthy guidelines, particularly when it comes to maintaining a healthy weight.

"As our waistlines expand, it appears that our perception of what is a healthy weight has also expanded so many people who are overweight or obese do not actually see themselves in this way," Dr Roberts said.

Heart disease remains the most common cause of mortality among Australians. There are steps everyone can take to improve heart health including maintaining a healthy weight, eating healthy food, exercising and knowing your blood-cholesterol and blood-pressure levels.

The study also found:

  • 21.3 percent of the population is obese compared to 18 percent last year.
  • Men are more likely to think they meet weight guidelines though they are overweight or obese with 22 percent of obese men believing they meet the guidelines compared with 12 percent of women.
  • Overall, 54 percent of the population is either overweight or obese, compared to 50 percent last year.

I can't believe that people are defnding those who are overweight. I agree with SAFFA. People these day think it is the norm to be over weight. I was over weight in my teens and i felt so unhealthy and my slef esteem was almost non existant. I woke up to myself and lost weight and now i feel better than ever. I think that people should stop making excuses such as,' i don't have enough time, i'm so busy, it's too much money blah blah blah. You can do exercises from home that will cost you nothing and you can do them in your own time. And as for food, it does cost more to eat healthy, however you have to weigh it up. What's more important, your health and your family or that hamburger (or two) you much on. Take my advice, the weight can be lost and you will reap the benifits. Excerise doesn't have to be hard and strenuous. Take the family to the park, take the dog for a walk or use the stairs at a shopping centre. It all counts. Poeple need to wake up to themselves!!!
i am overweight by 5 kilos which i don't think is really that much to worry about as i'm pretty good at losing one or two quite easily.but i'm still what you class as overweight, which really annoys me.i am quite fit i walk every day, ride a bike occasionally and do alot of housework so lay off all you fat obsessed people.
People seem to be getting so upset about the effect the media has on body image, and how it encourages people to think that 'super-skinny' is normal. Well the same goes with 'super-fat'. I can conceed that some people's weight problems are due to genetics, but you can't blame the fast food companies - you don't have to eat there. I myself am healthy, 168cm tall and I weigh a bit over fifty kilos - why? Because I exercise and I eat right, I haven't been to MacDonalds for two or three years, I spend at least an hour a day walking or jogging, and I don't sit in front of the TV all day. But the media does influence body image - by telling people that it's okay to be overweight, and you should accept your body, when it's unhealthy. Unhealthy body images should not be promoted at either end of the spectrum. So I think a lot of this comes down to the media, as well as laziness - but DON'T blame it on the fast food companies - YOU are the one that goes to MacDonalds instead of Sumo Salad.
Ppl who are overweight do not want to be. You only have to watch Biggest Loser and see their emotional struggle to realise what a terrible emotional toll is has on ppl. I grew up in England during the seventies and early eighties, in Doncaster, a working class mining town. We did not have MDonalds, Kentucky, Pizza hut, or any other take aways. We had good old fish n chips, and lots of home cooked meals, fattening, yes, but home cooked. ppl varied in size and the older folks were bigger, fat young ppl were a rarity. Young ppl today are not lazy, they are overwhelmed with choice, too much choice, too much convenience. Throughout my young yrs I remained a size 10, because we didnt have the same choices as ppl do today. I would have been twice my size if I had the above choices too, as a teenager. I am currently in my late 40s and size 12 but it takes a lot of discipline to stay there. It takes a lot of will power. GO MAGDA, GO BIGGEST LOSERS, and good luck to all dieters
Anna from Sydney, you ask how size 14 can be average but size 16 is obese.. I'm not sure if you read the article but the entire point was that more than half our population is overweight or obese. The way averages work is that you take everyone's weight, or size, or BMI, add those numbers up together, then divide the result by the number of people you used. This means that if more than half those people are overweight or obese, the result for average size would be skewed upwards. Nobody is saying size 14 is what everyone should be.. but given how large the proportion of overweight people is in our population, the bigger size of 14 has indeed become about average. At 166cm I have never been much bigger than a big size 10 or small size 12, and at a size 12, I was overweight for my height, and you could tell!
I totally agree with some of these comments. I think that fat people believe they are within the healthy weight range because its the majority-rules effect. I was overweight a few years ago, nowhere near obese, but got up and exercised and am now lean and fit at a size 6-8. Personally, I am sick and tired of fat people telling me "you're too skinny", "you need to put some fat on" etc. I am fit, healthy and athletic, my bones dont stick out, and I have toned muscle that was hard work to achieve, and if fat people dont like it or are jealous, they can go jump....if indeed they are still able to!
,Even if obese people lost all there fat you would all pay the same Taxes.Lot's of tax payer's money is wasted I can think of 20 thing's that has nothing to do with obese people. Who do you think your helping by being Nasty,Cranky people. I find most lazy fat people are very happy they are all so funny and very caring. What kind of world are we going to have. I love that we are all different,go and buy yourself's a cream cake have a cuppa don't exersize take the pressure of yourself's Be happy!
I am type 1 diabetic and I get a little ticked off at the media linking type2 diabetes with type 1.Mine is genetic not life style related like type 2 maybe we should change its name to what it is really DIABESITY.Lazy people stuffing their fat faces with crap food and wondering why they are unhealthy.Get off your *** and get back into life.
I guess people feel as though extra weight is healthy because being overweight is normal i.e. normal equals the 54% majority. Our lifestyles are to blame..too much junk, over processed high carb food, sedentary work and lives etc. I've also noticed that fit people these days tend to be higher socio economic (whereas traditionally a belly meant you were living well). I think the best strategy to lose weight is to make small changes to lifestyle such as eating more fresh food and using the car a little less in the day to day. I get off the train 1 stop early and walk as well as go for a walk at lunch...seem to work and I don't really notice the effort.
All those whinging and complaining about your weight - IT'S YOUR OWN FAULT! I too am at least 15kg overweight and I do not blame anyone other than myself! Too many people have been blaming too many others for their own faults. Blame the Govt, blame the schools, blame the police, blame the council, blame the Americans, blame the Poms, blame everybody else but yourself. Kyle was right when he commented on the Concentration Camp. He may have been rude and insensitive but he was right. There are no fat people in a Concentration Camp. Change your eating habits and get off your backside once in a while and take responsibility for own weight.
