I recently had surgery for ovarian cancer and I am now having chemotherapy. What should I be doing to build up my immune system in the meantime?
S. Boursel, Qld
Astraglaus (Astragalus membranaceus) and maitake (Grifola frondosa) are two immune-enhancing herbs that are unlikely to interfere with the chemotherapy. When the chemotherapy ends, go on a regimen of antioxidants (vitamins C and E, mixed carotenes, and selenium).
Eat a clean diet with lots of organic fruits and vegetables and pure water. Investigate therapies and activities that stimulate your spirituality, such as yoga and meditation; working with your mind/body connection will strengthen your body's defences. (Note: Contraindications are rare, but it is sensible to advise your primary healthcare provider about any supplements you are taking.)
