What is the Feldenkrais method and what is it good for?

Question: What is the Feldenkrais method and what is it good for?

The Feldenkrais method has been described as a way of 'finding your inner cat' because it makes movement easy, smooth, and more efficient, using minimal effort and improved coordination. The method is the secret behind the poise of many actors and dancers; increasingly, sportspeople also use it to fine-tune and control their performance.

The method was developed by Moshe Feldenkrais, a Russian engineer who had also trained in the martial arts. When he broke his knee playing football, he was told that the only treatment was surgery, so he decided to use his knowledge of physics and motion to solve the problem. He discovered that stiffness and pain are not just caused by physical disability or injury, but also by incorrect movement. By 're-educating' the body — that is, by becoming more aware of actions and movement and teaching the body to move in different ways — he found it was possible to alter the neuromuscular patterns that organise and control movement.

Teachers of the method claim that it can help people who are suffering from a number of different types of chronic back, neck and shoulder problems, such as repetitive strain injury and neuromuscular disease, as well as the after-effects of strokes or accidents. The method works by making you more aware of your body movements, recognising any tensions and correcting them by directing you towards less damaging ways of moving your body. It is excellent for elderly people who need better flexibility, and as a de-stresser for anyone who spends long periods at a computer.
