What is aronia juice?

Question: I was looking at the ingredients of a fruit bar the other day and one of the ingredients was aronia juice. I've never heard of aronia before, what is it?

Answer: Aronia is the name for a couple of different types of small berry, which are also commonly referred to as chokeberries.

Aronia is native to North America and comes in both black and red varieties, with the red berries having a slightly sweeter, less bitter flavour than the black berries.

Having said this, both colours are known for their astringency, which has been suggested as the reason for their other common name.

Analysis has shown aronia to be high in antioxidants (particularly the black variety) and aronia juice can be used to make jams and flavour other foods and drinks such as tea and dairy products.

When used in food products, such as a fruit bar, they are usually blended with a variety of other fruits to help provide flavour while not overpowering the food with their tartness.
