Did you know that around one-third of your child’s daily nutritional requirements need to come from the food they eat at school? For this reason, it is important to ensure lunchboxes are packed full of healthy food your kids will eat!
Question: What makes a good lunchbox?
Answer
School lunches don’t have to be limited to sandwiches made from sliced bread – there are other great alternatives, such as wholemeal lavash and pita breads. After you’ve chosen your wholegrain base, add some protein and a variety of vegies. Perhaps this week you could try lavash bread spread with avocado, grated carrot, red capsicum strips and grated cheese or egg and lettuce.
What about snacks?
For snacks, fruit is a great option. You can also combine the fruit with yogurt or custard. Also, pop in a yummy treat. Try unsalted popcorn, sultanas, muffins, fruit bread, crumpets or pikelets instead of chips, chocolate or muesli bars.
... and fruit juice?
The best drink option for your child is water. Cordials, soft drinks and fruit juices are all full of sugar and calories with little to no nutritional benefit. Water is cheap and, by freezing the water bottle, will help keep the food in their lunchbox cool and fresh.
