The lunchbox dilemma

Question: I've got gout and was wondering if there is anything I can change in my diet to help??

Answer

Gout is a painful arthritis triggered by urate crystals within the joints. Urate is a by-product of the breakdown of proteins. These crystals can form when there is an imbalance between urate production and its removal. Diet is one factor that can influence this balance. If you suffer from gout, the following simple changes may help prevent gout episodes:

  • Maintain a healthy weight. If you are overweight try eating smaller portions, record foods eaten to monitor your intake, plan healthy meals and snacks, reduce the amount of fat in your diet and take time to savour each mouthful.

  • Exercise regularly. In order to manage your weight, try to exercise for at least 30 minutes most days and more if possible. Remember to discuss this with your doctor if you are very overweight.

  • Eat more plant-based meals. Meat and seafood has been linked with an increased risk of gout. Vegetable protein from legumes, nuts and seeds can offer protection. Enjoy plant foods regularly as they will also help to improve the overall quality of your diet — because they are excellent sources of protein, fibre, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

  • Avoid alcohol. If you do drink, current research indicates that wine may be a better choice rather than beer or spirits. And remember to have some alcohol-free days each week.

  • Drink milk. Research suggests that drinking a glass of low-fat milk daily can help lower urate levels. Gout is often associated with other problems such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, glucose intolerance, high cholesterol and high triglycerides. It is recommended that you consult your doctor for further advice.
