Question: I want to include more legumes in my diet, but don't know how. How can I get the family to enjoy legumes?

Answer

  • Replace some meat with chickpeas, kidney beans or other beans in hotpots, stir-fries and soups.

  • Enjoy a hearty soup made with split peas.

  • Mexican tacos are a family favourite. Replace minced meat with re-fried beans or spicy kidney beans.

  • Use tofu to make kebabs and stir-fries.

  • Replace dairy milk with soymilk on your breakfast cereal and in cooking.

  • A chickpea curry is quick and easy to make.

  • Try an Indian dhal, which is a delicious dish made from lentils.

  • Look out for legume-based burgers and sausages. Try chickpea or lentil burgers at barbecues or for a quick family meal.

  • Legumes can be purchased dry, canned (in brine or flavoured sauces, such as baked beans) and in pre-cooked pouches. There are also a range of legume-based burgers, burger mixes and burger rolls that provide a quick and easy way to enjoy legumes in your diet.

  • Tofu, soy burgers and even soy "mince" are also tasty and easy-to-use legume products.
