Question: So what are the main parts of a food label that are relevant to you as a consumer?
Answer:
The ingredient list
Read the list of ingredients and choose foods with as many whole ingredients as possible, and fewer additives. This will help you to make choosing great, healthy foods easy.
The per 100g or 100ml column
To compare between similar products, look at this column. Choose the product with the smallest number of kilojoules.
The fat content
Aim to choose products with less than 10g fat per 100g, and less than 3g fat per 100g wherever possible.
The sugar content
Aim to choose products with less than 10g of sugar per 100g. Breakfast cereals containing fruit will naturally contain more sugars, so for these cereals aim for varieties with less than 25g sugar.
Fibre
Aim to choose fibre-containing foods such as breakfast cereals, bread and pasta with more than 3g of fibre per serve.
