A UK survey has found that dog owners do more exercise than people who don't have any such four-legged friend.

Dog owners take their pet for an average of two walks per day, for 24 minutes each adding up to five hours and 38 minutes per week, the UK's Daily Mail reported. They additionally take their dogs for three long walks each week adding two hours and 33 minutes to the total.

The study a by pet healthcare product company in the UK, Bob Martin, found that non-pet owners only did an average of 80 minutes of exercise each week, which sometimes included going to the gym or going for a jog or a walk. However 47 percent of those without a pet said they did no exercise at all.

"Owning a dog makes us more healthy," a spokesman for Bob Martin told the Daily Mail. "The [UK] Government recommends 30 minutes of moderate cardiovascular exercise three to five times per week and it's encouraging to see that dog walkers are exceeding this target and enjoying it at the same time."

The survey found that only 16 percent of respondents enjoyed exercising at the gym and almost 70 percent saw it as a chore while 86 percent of dog owners described walking their pet as an enjoyable exercise and 22 percent saw it as a chore.

The study of 5000 people in the UK, 3000 of which were dog owners, revealed that even when time is scarce, 60 percent of dog owners will make the effort to take their four-legged friend for a walk. Whereas 46 percent of gym-goers reported they were likely to make an excuse and find a way to get out of exercise.

Your say: How regularly do you exercise? Do you find it easier to be motivated because you have a pet to walk? Do you see going to they gym as a chore? Would you rather walk your dog or go to they gym? Share your thoughts with us below.

It is big *** to the dog treadmills. I go to YMCA every Sunday to play badminton for 1 or 2 hours. If I own dog, it would be chore for me to walk dog as I don't have free time. I don't pay for running in gym either. When I want to run, I run.
I love the fact that i have 2 personal trainers at hoime in th eform of Kelpies! They are the best motivation and i have lost 10kgs since having them. Everyday rain hail or shine we're outexploring through the bush racing up hills i love it, its my 'me time'. People that buy dogs and tunr them into backyard ornaments really get my goat though. Please people if you do get a dog its a daily ocmmitmnet not juat when you feel like it. they get bored too and descructive when left alone in a backyard for weeks on end, so if your dog is ripping clothes off the line, digging holes or just barking all day, YOU ONLY HAVE YOUR LAZY SELF TO BLAME!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a dog and a gym membership. At one point I was doing both, walking the dog in the morning for one hour, then going to work, then going to the gym for 2 hours at night. This strenuous routine has now been replaced by my walking the dog every night. I don't time myself walking and running with my dog. I do about 15 kms on a good night, 8 kms on an average night. I absolutely love it and never find it a chore. My gym membership is virtually obsolete and my beautiful dog loves it!
I have two young pups and they get walked everyday, this includes a few longer walks during the week as well. I love this part of my week as it gives not only myself a chance to keep fit but it also keeps my pets fit all while being able to relax and think on my own, as well as gives me a chance to bond with my pets and teach them new critical tricks that may save their lives one day. They also get taken to the beach about once to twice a fortnight as well. I love the gym as well but due to my financial status taking the dogs for a walk everyday is much more suitable to my lifestyle.
Chelsea ( miniature Labradoodle goes a walk every day except Sunday. We take it in turns. Even when it is a Thursday and I have been shopping it is so good to get out in the fresh air, and a joy to see her wagging her tail and her eyes shining in anticipation. Does us both the world of good. She has a 1 hour walk per day and then with me about 45 minutes. Make us feel good.
I have a 18mth old german shepherd that loves her walks. Tara and I walk morning and night a minimum of 1.5hrs, Mon to Fri and 1hour on a Saturday and Sunday. We have a great time and it is good for her socially meeting other dogs and people.
Imagine how many dogs lives could be saved if all these people who waste their money on gym memberships actually went to the local shelter and used this money to adopt a dog? Save a dog, and get fit at the same time! It's a win, win situation!!
2 walks a day averaging 24 minutes each! Would be nice to have that much free time. But then again I dont own a dog because I know I could not commit that much time to it. Good on people who can.
I have watched my money go to waste on a gym membership because i am just too lazy to go, but now i look forward to getting home every day just to take my rotti for a walk to the park. it is sooo much more fullfilling watching him have a blast which makes it enjoyable for me too. however i dont encourage people to get a dog purely to save gym membership costs or as an incentive to work out as people can be lazy dog owners too. owning any animal is a huge responsibility.
Hi, it is so funny when you see people who pay to use the gym, bother to turn up, wearing all the right clothes and expensive shoes - sitting on an exercise bike - hardly peddeling because they are reading a magazine or a book - cheaper to own a dog, look after it and get some real exercise (and heaps of love too).
