Question: We’ve had a flea collar on our dog Jess for several months, but the other day, my husband was bitten by a flea. Jess has been scratching and there are fleas everywhere. Where did they come from?
Janice, Naracoorte, SA.

Answer
This is a phenomenon called "re-emergence" and occurs when flea control has not been effective and you get a large number of fleas suddenly appearing. Flea collars are often not good at stopping fleas, allowing them to continue to lay eggs.

The eggs can lie dormant during the winter, but with spring, they hatch and start jumping on pets and people. You will need to ask your vet to recommend a flea product that will remove all the fleas quickly and safely.
