The holidays can be a great time to spend with your pets. If you're taking them with you on your trip away from home James Ramsden has some tips to make sure the trip is a great success. Plus we've got some great present ideas for your special pet.
Vaccinations: If your pets are going to board, make sure vaccinations are current. Parvovirus, a killer disease in dogs, has been mutating and there have been deaths. Discuss this with your vet to ensure your pet is protected properly.
Christmas food: With all the festive fun, avoid the temptation to feed Christmas dinner to your pets. Fat and sugar can upset tummies or lead to more serious conditions such as pancreatitis. Cooked bones are dangerous as they can become lodged in the gut. Chocolate is toxic to pets – as are sultanas, onions, grapes and macadamias.
For a healthy dinner for your furry friend, use their usual food, raw bones and special treats from your vet or pet stores.
TOP 3 CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR DOGS
Bones: This simple gift, tied with a ribbon, helps keep dogs’ teeth clean and the chewing action releases serotonin, the brain’s feel-good chemical. Raw lamb necks cost around $2 each from your butcher.
Kong: Stuff this toy with food and watch your dog enjoy hours of fun. Available at pet stores, from $16 for puppies, to the biggest Kong for big chewers at $28.
Chuck It ball launcher: This is by far the easiest way to throw a ball. It suits both old and young dog owners. Available from pet stores from $18.
TOP 3 CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR CATS
A feather or fish dangle toy: Cats love to leap and play. See how high your cat can jump! From $6 from pet stores.
Cardboard box: Cats love to snuggle up in small spaces, such as cardboard boxes or large shopping bags. It’s the cheapest present you’ll find!
Garden shelf: Put a shelf high on the wall of your house or fence. Place it so your cat can jump up for a better view over the fence. Indoor cats enjoy shelves that help them climb up to windows. Make one yourself or visit www.catmax.com.au.
