Dog trainer to the stars, Cesar Millan, has taken the US by storm with his award-winning TV show, Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan. He has helped celebrities such as Oprah, Scarlett Johanssen and Nicholas Cage to solve their canine problems. Here, Cesar shares four things your dog wishes you knew.

Please exercise me
For many dogs, a lack of adequate exercise is the root of behaviour problems. Physical activity burns the dog’s excess energy and helps maintain his healthy state of mind.

Give me enough time
Dogs, like humans, are diurnal, so taking walks in the morning is ideal. Set aside 30 minutes to a full hour, but the specific needs of each dog differ.

Challenge me
Excessive barking is often the result of pent-up energy. Release it in more productive ways. Can you make a walk more challenging by walking on an incline or with you riding a bicycle? Can you provide more mental challenges, such as herding, agility training or simple obedience games? Find one you enjoy that your dog can participate in safely.

Please pick up after me
Be a responsible guardian and pick up after your dog.
