Men have longer sex life expectancy

"There are certainly some people who behave as if it is a condition."

Women may live longer, but men are sexually active until later in life, according to a new survey.

Men of all ages were reported to be more interested in sex (no surprises there) but on average men are still sexually active at 70 with women's desire starting to wane slightly earlier at 65, researchers from the University of Chicago studying middle-aged and older Americans have found.

"Overall, men were more likely than women to be sexually active, to report a good quality sex life, and to be interested and thinking about sex on a regular basis," the researchers wrote in the British Medical Journal.

"This disparity, and its implication for health, requires further exploration."

The survey also found that 55-year-old men who were in good health were twice as interested in sex and could enjoy several more years of sexual activity than their male peers in bad health. The same was true of women in good health but they still lagged behind their male counterparts.

The researchers, Dr Stacy Tessler Lindau and Dr Natalia Gavrilova, examined data from more than 3000 American men and women. They divided the participants into two groups, one including people aged 25 to 74 and the other including people aged 57 to 85. Participants were asked to rate their sex lives and desires on a scale of poor to excellent.

The study found that the disparity between the sexual activity of men and women actually increases with age.

While 30-year-old men can expect 35 years more of sexual activity and 45 years more of life, women of the same age can expect just 31 more years of sexual activity, but 50 more years of life. At 75 years of age and older, 40 percent of men were sexually active compared to just 17 percent of women. However, the researchers conceded that this difference could be down to women living longer than their partners as men and women in relationships reported the same sexual activity.

But there is more bad news for women, among over-75s who were still sexually active, only half the women rated the sex as "good" compared with two thirds of the men.

One theory regarding this is that treatments for male sexual problems have boomed in the last decade whereas for women there have been no such developments.

"Over time, we've seen the introduction of really effective treatments for male erectile dysfunction, which is one of the most common problems for men as they get older," Dr Lindau told LiveScience. "For women we haven't seen the same."

I'm over 40, have a stronger libido than when I was 20 and truth be told, I am not interested in how long a woman remain sexually active because any woman over 25 is out of my target range.
My dad was 30years older than my mum &he father my brother at 71 and this is why my mum always said the only safe man is one that has been dead 2 weeks. He was great at sex until he 2weeks before he died at 86.
At 50, my sexual performance seems as just as good, in many ways better, than in my 20's. My 24 y.o. gf who works out 5 days a week can't keep up. No viagra required. It's a state of mind. My libido is closely aligned with my emotional state, when that's good so is my sex drive, if I'm stressed out, no amount of Viagra helps. I like at least 7 hours of sex a week - keeps me young, heathy & happy.
There is no doubt that men are interested in sex at a greater age than women. A woman seems to peak at around 58 with males at around 75. Mind you, not all men can complete the act, but they are definitely interested. A lot of the matchmaking sites are full of older men wanting a relationship with a younger woman, only because they can`t get it at home. Unfortunately, the wife at home usually cuts up about that and there is the consequental marriage breakup, even though he may well still love his wife. Guess there is a case for the "professional" woman who can be a bit more discrete!! Is there not a way round this problem? Why can`t the wife allow someone else to fulfil his need if she can`t?.
What a load of rubbish, try surveying men that don't take viagra, I'm sure the results would be a lot different.
Dragonfruit it sounds like u have been having sex with the wrong men....with the right man, over-rated it isnt! Admittidly I would rather have no sex at all, than bad sex...but nothing beats good sex, regardless of age or gender......and its not just about the men - its also about getting your own needs met - you are sounding very one sided to me??
woman's organ is inside of body, they naturely protect themself as caring a inner child. while man's is outside of body, they care it less than woman. - the conclusion is when women become older, they are more care about health not only themself, the nature extend to care others. they become protector of children and weaker. they become stronger as leadership.
My partner is 6 years older than I, he is in his 50's, this is a second relationship for both of us. He has always had a very active sex life (this does not mean with more than one woman) his libido has waned a little now but then so has mine. But he would tell you in all honesty he finds my needs, so to speak, more than he expected and was pleasantly surprised. On occasion he has turned me down and there has been a rare occasion I have turned him down, both in favour of a cuddle. Our sex life averages out to be at least daily. My point is that, it's what you make of it and your personal compatibility, and how comfortable you are in your own skin, and with the person you're with. To us it's a healthy part of our relationship, but it's only a part, and certainly not the most important part. Perhaps the survey should have also addressed how close this aging population they surveyed is with their partner and what they think of their aging body image.
It doesn't take much to have a longer sex life than women, because they don't have one at all. When a man loses his sex drive he wants to die.
"Studies" don't really mean much. Its too individual an area to generalise like this. I am sure you would find that the older age groups would be tending to stick with the stereotypes of their era and the women would not be totally honest in their answers in the study. There are too many variables unaccounted for in this so called study, and in fact, most studies.
