Valentine heart biscuits
Did you know that there really was a St Valentine? Legend has it that in 270 AD, the Roman Emperor Claudius II beheaded a Christian priest for secretly continuing to perform marriage ceremonies for soldiers, for whom marriage was forbidden. His execution took place on February 14, the eve of a pagan spring festival named Lupercalia, the highlight of which was a lottery where young men were randomly paired with eligible young women.
In the mists of time, the two events became merged and St Valentine became known as the patron saint of lovers.
Of course it's commercial. But that doesn't mean that Valentine's Day isn't still a good excuse to indulge in a little unashamed romanticism, whether your loved one is an unattainable fantasy, the perfect partner, a child or your best friend. We honour St Valentine's memory, with a flutter of pretty hearts to make and give with love.
