According to findings from the US Women's Health Initiative, reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may decrease mammograms' effectiveness.
The results showed that the frequency of getting an abnormal reading was 35 per cent in the HRT group compared with 23 per cent in non-HRT users. The chance of having an abnormal scan rose with every year of HRT, jumping from 4 per cent for one year to 11 per cent after five; breast biopsies were also more common.
Given the emotional and economic cost of abnormal mammograms and biopsies, women considering even short-term HRT use should discuss this research with their doctor.
