"Finally, he just blurted it out – Gordon Ramsay had gone off half-cocked and publicly called me a fat pig, said I was old and needed Botox." — Tracy Grimshaw

After 29 years in journalism, A Current Affair’s Tracy Grimshaw is finally getting the recognition she deserves, thanks in part to a series of bruising public encounters this year, writes Michael Sheather.

Tracy Grimshaw couldn't believe what she was hearing. Driving home on a Saturday afternoon, she took a call from Grant Williams, executive producer of A Current Affair, but the news he delivered was the very last thing she expected.

“Grant’s a capable bloke, but he had trouble telling me what had happened,” recalls Tracy, the 47-year-old host of ACA. “And, finally, he just blurted it out – Gordon Ramsay had gone off half-cocked and publicly called me a fat pig, said I was old and needed Botox. I was completely stunned, absolutely gobsmacked. That’s the only way to describe it. I nearly drove off the road. I had to pull over to take it all in. It simply didn’t make any sense.”

It still doesn’t. Chef Gordon Ramsay’s bizarre, unprecedented and all too public attack on Tracy, with his cruel and sexist accusations about her sexuality, her appearance and her personality in June is as much a mystery to Tracy today as it was when it made headlines around the world three months ago.

Ramsay’s unprovoked tirade and Tracy’s sharp, eloquent and dignified television response – leaving her rude assailant sliced and diced, with nowhere to hide but the kitchen waste bin – was just one contest in a year of high drama and personal success for Tracy, who, with a series of hard-hitting TV encounters, has risen to be considered on the highest tier of Australia’s broadcast interviewers.

She has, say her many supporters, come of age as a journalist, presenter and interviewer, while just as many believe that recognition is long overdue. Her confrontational interview with former colleague and NRL footballer Matthew Johns earlier this year – in which she questioned Johns over his involvement in allegations of group sex during a football trip seven years ago, while his wife, Trish, sat beside him – is being touted as a contender at this year’s Walkley Awards, Australian journalism’s highest honours.

Awards aside, there seems little doubt that Tracy, one of the most accomplished journalists on Australian TV, is at the peak of her game. Her versatility is rarely equalled, slipping easily as she does from an interview with Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to a visiting Hollywood celebrity or a touching encounter with an injured policewoman left for dead after a vicious assault in Sydney’s Kings Cross.

And across them all, she hits the key issues with tenacity and compassion. “She always does a professional job, always had a great sense for a story, but also great humanity and humour,” says friend and Nine Network colleague, Liz Hayes, of 60 Minutes. “She knows how to keep her nerve, how to ask a tough question and not blink.”

They are skills Tracy has needed in spades recently. First, there was her confrontation with disgraced Australian swimmer Nick D’Arcy in April, putting the Olympic hopeful on the public record over his bar-room assault on fellow swimmer Simon Cowley, which left Cowley with a shattered jaw.

“I do like a vigorous interview, I must admit,” says Tracy, whose questioning had D’Arcy on the back foot. “You wouldn’t want to do them all the time because it’s exhausting, for everybody. But I was surprised to get Nick D’Arcy. We had spoken with Simon Cowley and it’s hard not to do a sympathetic piece with Simon because he’d been beaten unconscious. So I was surprised, but I think that showed some bravery on his part.”

Tracey is a very beautiful women & looks great for 47, send Gordon Ramsey back home, how dare he, sham he didn't look or speak as well as Tracey, maybe he would have some merit then
Get over it. It's been 3 months, and this is STILL going on. ACA is all about biased stories. The show only shows what will get ratings, there are only half-based truths. It only exploits people and the show is a disgrace to be related to 'journalism'. Tracy continuously hammers people, and when ONE person does it to her, her defenses are all up. Gordon Ramsy is known to be loud, arrogant and plainly tasteless in his words, so she should have just taken it on the chin, not bitten back. Pathetic. Shame on ACA, and mostly shame on Tracy. ACA is clearly "lucky" to have her as their host.
Really? No, Really? 'One of the most accomplished journalists on Australian TV, is at the peak of her game.' Really? She works for Channel 9. Although i must say her work on chonky builders, neighbours-from-hell, old people screwed over, fatties, cosmetic surgury gone wrong and celebritiy beat-ups is second to none. Week after week showing her 'sharp, eloquent and dignified ... versatility' when it comes to key, hard-hitting issues that stopped the nation, well the hearts of her aged audience. Seriously did anyone not watch the Chaser's segment on the 'War on Everything', "What have we learnt from Current Affairs?'. It pretty much undermined the 'versatility' that pumps tracy's Career as a 'coming-of-age' journalist in it's 'Current Affairs Tally Board'. Now I'm a 16-year-old 'youth gone wild', but at least the Bribey Island RSL and it's bingo players would have to agree with me on the filth, tarted up as news, that Tracy boasts about on ACA.
I really think this is the honest face of ACA, we have tracy grabing for ever viewer using gimicky showmanship worthy of Vagas casino. ramsay is a showman he too is trying to get ratings but he at least stays true to him self in doing so, why is he so popular? it is because he is uprupt and rude, that is the foundation in which he has built his on-air sucess, i do not agree with how he went about saying it but for the most part it is true. Tracys pompus reply only shows how hard those comments had hit home and in fact the manner in which she replyed only managed to decrease my respect for tracy. it is indeed true some people look better and in some cases more refined with age like a good red unfortunatly tracy is neither all she can do now is try and post-pone a well over due "throwing in of the towel".
journalists..... dissapointing, tracy may be a nice woman, but unfortunately working with ACA as a journalist gives little to no credit towards her as a person. I've grown to dislike even hate ACA almost as much as today tonight, both shows showing a 100 percent biased towards the interviewer segments. Good journalism? unbiased providing both sides of a story.... tracy fails in every aspect to achieve this....unfortunate, she could be a much better person.
Guys lets face it, either Gordon is a marketing legend or he's got one hell of a team working for him. All he has to do is fire off a quick few words about a well renowned reporter and he has himself headlines for the next week all for the price of... free! Either Tracey was in on this cutting a profit or she needs to build a bridge. Seriously! I haven't laughed that hard in a while as when i heard how upset she got over such trivial comments! Thanks for the amusement. lol.
I think she needs to get off that silly current affairs program and do something more deserving of her talents if she is as professional and talented as everyone is gushing she is. She hasn't done anything to make my generation sit and up and take notice. I still prefer the charm and wit of Parkinson personally and I think Grimshaw has a long way to go before she's in his league of interviewing perfection. But, hey, nobody's perfect. I think Gordon could use a few doses of botox himself, btw.
well done Tracy, keep up the good work!!
Tracey Grimshaw is an absolute hack. I can't believe that she may get an award for having a crack at a defenceless Johns. She brought down a man who had no defence and in my opinion was ridiculed for something he had done long ago and already gone through with his wife. Tracey attempted to make him look as bad as possible to make herself look better. As soon as Gordon turned around and said something about her she whinged and whined like it was the end of the world. If you can't take it Tracey, don't give it out. I felt sorry for Johns and his wife that night and lost all respect for you when you did that interview. The worst part it he was a collegue!
A fan of Tracey and agree she is too classy for ACA. In depth interviews and covering the bushfires etc are where she shines. She's smart, funny, warm and genuine. Smart enough to spin the 'story' on an arrogant offensive bully boy pom who talks and acts like a pig to generate publicity. Bizzare that the critic of our lovely Tracey has lines as deep as a Sharpei dog yet he suggests Tracey's natural ageing needs to be addressed cosmetically??!! mmmm.
