Here's to you Mrs Robinson...
"The guys are a lot of fun... They’re uncomplicated, unlike older men. I’m not interested in that baggage. I’ve just been all these years sorting myself out"

Older woman seeks young man for good times – no strings attached ... Lee Tulloch reports on the rise of the cougar and asks whether she’s a symbol of liberation or insecurity.

Rose Hantos, 52, a divorced community worker and grandmother of two from Sydney, is in search of a toy boy. Every now and then, she’ll put on hr “vivacious” look and dish out a fee of $89.95 to attend a cocktail party organised by umarket speed-dating organisation Fast Impressions. At the party, she will be one of a group of women over 45 who are there specifically to meet men aged 25 to 35.

Armed with a glass of champagne, each woman is given eight minutes to make her pitch to each young man and vice versa. At the end of the night, all the men and women fill out cards indicating which of the candidates caught their eye. Event manager Carolyn Clydesdale says toy boy speed dating has the highest match rate of all the company’s speed-dating events, with 80 to 90 per cent of the older women finding at least one toy boy who would like to see her again.

“The guys are a lot of fun,” Rose explains. “They’re uncomplicated, unlike older men. I’m not interested in that baggage. I’ve just been all these years sorting myself out!”

Rose is a cougar and proud of it. According to the most common definition, a cougar is a sexy and sophisticated older woman who prefers to date men at least 10 years younger than herself. The term first appeared on the radar in the late 1990s. Two Canadian women created a website called cougardate.com, purportedly after hearing the term used by members of a local hockey team, who likened a group of older women who hung around the stadium and pursued them to wild cats. In 2001, US author Valerie Gibson jumped on the trend and released her book Cougar: A Guide For Older Women Dating Younger Men. There are now dozens of cougar dating websites, including dateacougar.com and urbancougar.com.

US actress Kim Cattrall’s sexually voracious character, Samantha Jones, on Sex And The City, was probably the prototype for the modern cougar, but the concept has now gone prime time with the release of the much-hyped TV series Cougar Town on the Seven Network. In it, Courteney Cox, 45, plays recently divorced real estate agent Jules, who has a slacker ex-husband, a teenage son and a bad case of sexual insecurity.

“It’s scary to be a 40-year-old woman,” she tells a younger friend. “You can’t make babies anymore and your looks are faded.” More than anything, she fancies a roll in the hay with a young stud.

Luckily for Jules, she lives in a Florida enclave where it is the norm for older women to openly pounce on younger men. Yet these cougars spend so much time trawling for young men, they have morphed into aggressive, surgically-enhanced trolls. When Jules takes a young conquest out to a restaurant, the 50-ish woman at the next table leans across and quips, “If you’re not going to eat that, can I have it?” At the high school football game, one of the women lusts after a player and tells her friend, “I’d love to lick his body” – in front of his mother. The cougars of Cougar Town make the Desperate Housewives girls seem like Betty Crocker.

A "cougar" of a decent age i.e. under 45 would be nice, however, over that age range, i'd seriously avoid getting a glimpse of that package, no offence. After all, who'd want to be having "rotten" meat, while there is still fresh and tasty meat around. As they say, Old is Gold, sorry but that is not the case with us humans.
I think any person of either gender or age who goes out trolling for "conquests" is pathetic, but don't have a problem with age gaps either way in a mutually satisfying, nonexploitative relationship. Who has the right to determine acceptable age limits in any relationship between 2 people of legal age and (at least reasonably) sound mind? There are far too many variables at play for general age gap judgements to be made. At 40 and single, I am happy to go either side by about 8 years, but may go outside of my own boundaries, depending of course on the other individual. At 30, 48 seemed way old to me, but now, I find some 48 yo guys are very attractive, due in part to thier maturity and life experience, not neccessarily their looks, and as I am already dreading having my senior years being stuck with a grumpy old man who falls asleep on the couch, I may very well consider a 40's to 50's yo "toyboy" for fun in my older years. Men can do it, why not women??
When and where is this convention of cougars. I better get my freak on, I love cougars, they actually know what there doing in the sack unlike the younger women. Experienced sums them up in one word.
I find the story on cougars rather depressing, are we women meant to feel empowered by being given yet another name? It seems as women we are constantly getting labelled animal names. Cow, chick, bush pig, face like a horse, the backside of an elephant, old hen, now cougar, swoftie & panther. You can put a spin on it but at the end of the day, they are making fun of us. That new series with Courtney Cox is degrading all it's doing is pin pointing the differences on what the younger girls do (even the size of the handbag). What about some names for the men? What do you call a man with a woman half his age, oh is that a paedophile? Why don't they have more brothels for women, must be loads of money waiting to be made there! Men have such a choice and we have zilch in comparison. Christ, they have even designed a female robot for sex as well as the 'Real Dolls' made in the US.
I am a woman in her mid fifties and it amazes me how often I am approached by much younger men. I have had my share of flings with younger guys and I have to say they are so much less complicated than older men. Men my age have all been divorced widowed separated or worse still, never married. They come with so much excess baggage it's just not worth the effort. Anyway most of them have had their hearts broken and are terrified of being hurt again so they avoid commitment like the plague. Bring on the toy boys! what you see is what you get and it doesn't hurt the ego to know you can still attract a younger man. As 'Lovinit' said they are not all just looking for sex either. A lot of them are actually looking for something permanent and yes, we are the lucky ones and jealousy is a curse!
meow...i am 36yo and my ptr is 23. thats a good 13 years difference. He is immature in certain things and i am very serious on others... which can make things a bit difficult...but ive been around enough to know that in any relationship...theres always SOMETHING thats not PERFECT....and in the end...it all comes down to attitude....we are both happy and positive and really appreciate each other and respect each other...which is absolutely marvellous...did i mention the sex....my last date before i met my cub ..liked to drink and couldnt even perform in most cases...my sex life now...i have FOREPLAY...i mean REAL FOREPLAY...beautiful...ppl..to make a decision on this...and im not talking about cougars out stalking cubs...thats a whole different story...im talking about a real relationship....what you need to do is strip away the fear...and look into that persons soul....do you love each other and do you respect each other...if you can answer yes confidently...than age is just a number
Cougars is just a spin name for Dirty Old Woman.
I agree with a lot of the other comments. I am also a 40 year old woman who's still very attractive and married (20 years), and although younger men find me attractive, I still find the term cougar extremely demeaning. Women our age should be full of confidence and proud of the woman they have grown into and not be "on the chase" for toy boys. They are only after one thing, and it will usually end up in tears. Grow up, be proud of your generation, achievements and have pride in yourself!
I'm not a cougar, happily in long term relationship with a slightly older man but more power to all those cougars out there. It just takes a well adjusted young man to not be intimidated by and be crazy about an older woman. As for some people who complain about the label, we have labels for so many things, cradle snatchers, old man young woman "sugar daddy" or I guess "dirty old man" might work too. I think it's perfectly acceptable for an older woman to have the "candy" that's what equality is all about. I can't help thinking of Geoffrey Edelsten - his bride may not be the smartest or indeed the most natural looking woman around but I dunno, he's not exactly young or natural looking either. Demi Moore looks pretty amazing with whatever work she may or may not have had done and I congratulate her on getting a cool dude like Ashton Kutcher. He seems like a fun cute smart guy to have won her. More power to cougars and their lovers! May they live long and happy lives together!
I am a Cougar myself. Last year I was on facebook commenting on some younger friends statuses when I decided to add a couple of guys I knew from the car cruise scene. One of them is still my lover today. We tried at a relationship but we experienced a bad set of circumstances at the time we were trying to cement the relationship and we both have depression so we didnt cope all that well. After a period of sadness we are back on track and think the world of each other and are the best of friends as well as lovers. He is my soulmate in that he is my perfect match in every way including maturity, attitude to life, movies, music etc. I have never had someone fit me so well in my life and I am enjoying every minute of it. You cannot help who you fall for and we have a closeness that not even my ex husband and I shared. Who knows what will happen in the future but I plan to die with no regrets. He will certainly never be a regret for me.
