Julie Prior and Mel Gibson were teenage sweethearts. Here, she tells Michael Sheather about the five happy years she shared with the charismatic young man who became one of Hollywood's biggest stars.

For Julie Prior, love’s first bloom is no romantic cliché. Tucked between the pages of a yellowed, time-worn photographic album rests the now fragile stem and petals of the first rose that her teenage boyfriend – a handsome, chisel-jawed youth with a fine crop of curling shoulder-length hair – gave her more than 37 years ago.

That Julie, now 53, kept such a memento is not so remarkable, but the identity of the boy who gave it to her is. It was Mel Gibson, the man who would, in later years, conquer Hollywood, win Oscars and accolades, and become for millions of women around the world the sexiest man on the planet.

The rose that Mel gave Julie was the first indication of his affections for her, an affection that lasted throughout their teenage years, from 1971 until Mel ended their relationship five years later, after he entered the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA).

“Mel was my first boyfriend, my first love in that teenage sense,” says Julie, who also has a silver friendship ring, a present from Mel on her 16th birthday. “He was a huge part of my life. We were virtually joined at the hip for five years.

“I kept the rose all this time because I was in love with him and he was with me, too. People say that you never forget your childhood sweetheart.

“I think that’s true. Mel was my childhood sweetheart and I haven’t forgotten him, but it would be difficult to forget being sweethearts with Mel.”

Of course, Mel Gibson’s star doesn’t burn as brightly these days as it once did. His reputation in Hollywood and, perhaps, across the globe, hangs in tatters after a series of outbursts and scandals that have seen him labelled as anti-Semitic, misogynist and dangerously close to the edge.

Your say: what do you think of Mel Gibson? Do you think he is still the superstar he once was? Would you go and see a film with him in it?

Leave him alone to sort out his life. Its sad that he had blinkers on and didn't see the golddigger for what she trully is. Mel has achieved great things in his life and career . He will allways have good friends to support him. life is full of mistakes nobody is perfect.
Life is a hard path when you are young you do things by impulse then in the middle years , you have responsibilities ie. bring up children home making a home for them. Then in your later years boredom sets in as everything slow down so some drink and get themselves in trouble. Young people who dont have any commitments are reaching this point from childhood. (NOT ALL)
He is just a selfish man that was at the right place at the right time , his movies are simple and light hearted that carter to a large audiance..........his relationships , he is a man with a *** and good luck to any woman that can take atvantage of that .
He is a good actor, correct but so what there are many others and once too often he has foot in his month, who's right and who's wrong, we don't have to care but it pretty much sums up him as a 'person', a very bad character!!!
Ok...so Mel marries a younger woman, she wants his money, he leaves his long time wife to marry this woman.. doesn't this sound just a bit off right from the get go?How many of us men wouldn't be tempted at his age, and also fall into the same trap. his mistake was leaving his wife in the first place. As for this Russian woman I said it was going to be a tough boat to float before she dug her nails into Mel...too bad Mel didn't see it...I think any man would have stepped off the deep end a bit knowing he was about to be taken to the cleaners. We all watch out for scammers.. I guess sometimes they come in a more seductive body as well. I would watch a picture with Mel with out a second thought... he may end up needing all our help...
I go to the movies to see the story and would pay to see another Mel movie. Leave him alone to work out his own life.
Mel Gibson describes himself as an American. He was born in America so it is not that surprising. He hits women. He hits a woman breastfeeding a child. He yells at women. He is a low life, another Matthew Newton. Sadly, there are a lot of them around. If it were joe *** down the street who yelled and screamed and belted his partner there would be a unified call for the man to be held accountable. Mel Gibson used to be good looking, he has made lots of money so we must find someone else to blame for the abuse. She made him frighten her and hit her? are some of you people seriously blaming the woman?
It's true he has not done very well in his private life in the past few years, but I know a number of people around his age that are similar but just not famous. Only the tabloids will make a mountain out of mole hill by stuff said under the influence of drink, what mel said is mild compared to some of the things i've heard from drunks that when sober are not racist at all. As to his ranting about a rose garden, I dont drink but i've lost my temper at times and said i'd do much worse than just a rose garden. Saying something and doing it are two different things. Went to karioke bar and asked the boss if I could kill the singer, doesnt mean I did or would. I think the fact she taped it needs to be looked into, if she knew how to push his buttons then theres no reason to suspect she orchestrated the whole thing. Do we now if she has any tapes were nothing came of it. Yes I have seen his latest movie and think its up with with the best of them. ...Go Mel..
mel gibson is human he makes mistakes like anyone else but he is not a bad person an people shouldnt rite him off he can be a part of my movie anyday
leave him alone, have you never made a mistake in your life, we don't know the full story so how can we judge him
