Australia loves Rebecca Gibney

Australia loves Rebecca Gibney – her Gold Logie proves that. Yet her success has masked enormous pain, as she tells Wendy Squires.

It's hard to comprehend that the story Rebecca Gibney is telling could actually have happened. It seems impossible that the bubbly actress with the twinkling periwinkle blue eyes, easy smile and contagious laugh at lunch today is the same person who, she’s explaining, suffered a full-scale emotional collapse with agoraphobia, depression and panic attacks that kept her a virtual prisoner in her own home.

It also seems inconceivable that Rebecca was so full of self-loathing, regret and shame that she admits, “I needed Valium to go to the supermarket”, was so fearful that, if she stepped outside her front door, she would be overwhelmed by the belief that “people were staring at me and I’d have to run back inside”, and so unhappy that she couldn’t imagine ever laughing again.

Perhaps it’s because it’s hard not to compare Rebecca with her affable character, Julie Rafter, in the Seven Network's hugely popular series, Packed to the Rafters.

Or perhaps it's just that Rebecca is such a warm, friendly and gracious dining companion, it's simply too disturbing to imagine her in such pain.

Yet in a candid interview with The Weekly, Rebecca confesses her childhood home-life in New Zealand was vastly different to that of the loving Rafter clan. As the youngest of six children, Rebecca regularly witnessed her mother being beaten by her violent, alcoholic father, living in a constant state of fear as to when, where and who he would strike next.

The legacy of abuse left a dark shadow that clouded Rebecca's happiness until she turned 30 and which, like all shadows, badly needed to be confronted. Yet, like so many surviviors of chaotic childhoods, Rebecca's self-examination got lost in life's daily battle until, one day, she explains, "your past comes up and bites you on the bum".

After reading your story about Rebecca I have nothing but admiration for her. I can relate very well to her past and present circumstances as I too have had a very similar life. I know just how hard it is to put the past to rest. Many times I have thought I have achieved this, only to have it 'catch up' with me again, however somehow I have found the strength to keep going. Rebecca is a very inspiring example of perserverence and achievment against the odds.
What a great show is "Packed to the Rafters". Congratulations Rebecca, a worthy winner. It takes courage to be so public about depression, sadly society often still views depression as a personal weakness. It takes even more courage and strength to face the demons, she has proved she is a survivor. We have great admiration for Rebecca as an actor and just love her bubbly, down to earth personality, she is a breath of fresh air, unpretentious and very honest
From the very first time I set eyes on Rebecca it was instant love and I could not comper her with anybody else. In my eyes she was the most beatiful woman I've ever seen. I think that Rebecca is a great actress and those beautiful blue eyes say it all. That is from the outside. She is also beautiful on the inside and I love to see her act. I beleive that what she says on the screen she can feel it in her heart. I wish I can shake her by the hand and wish her good health and a long life
I like her because she appears normal not like a lot of celeb wannabes
We love her because she is down to earth, self affacing, talented & beautiful. It is sad to read her story and it mirrors what happened to me so i can understand it can happen. The good news is she got through it. We have adopted her as a Aussie and love to see her on the TV anytime. I wish her well she deserves it.
Not Rebecca Gibney. Not all of Aussies love this actress. Typical media overhype. "Flavour of the month" for now maybe.. Meh
the subtlety of her expression and the depth of understanding in her eyes make her apealling even before she utters a word. She does not disapoint when she speaks. her tone of voice and variety of emotions she portrays makes her interesting. some actors can be watched with the sound off and still be entertaining Rebecca is one of the few in this league. Mabe it was because of her early difficulties that she has this interesting facial apearance. There is a touch of sadness in her otherwise twinkling eyes . She has been blessed with apealing features and has become an actress that people want to see regardless of the plot. her award is well deserved.
just comes across as a lovely girl
Rebecca is a born natrual. A normal everyday person that is not so full of herself, a person one can relate too. A Woman who is admired, loved and adored, both on and off the screen.
Hi, I absolutely loved your story on Rebecca Gibney in June's issue of AWW, and would love to include a precis I have written on it as a beautiful message on Forgiveness for my book, "I Choose to be Free. I Choose to be Me"...so can you. It's perfect. There's not enough space for me to attach my excerpt, so I would be so, so grateful if you could give me an email link where I can reach someone to forward it on to Rebecca for her approval. I've taken the pertinent points as per your inspiring story and written them in my own words to convey a strong, powerful message which I believe Rebecca would be proud to share. One can see and feel the beauty radiating from her, and it would be my absolute honour to spread her message as we do our bit to make a difference and open humanity's heart. Your assistance in me reaching Rebecca is much appreciated. Once I have an email address, I will attach the Key with the story, for approval. Again, THANK YOU. Regards, Di Gorry
