The world has virtually ground to a halt with the death of two of the greatest icons of our time. Music legend Michael Jackson has died from a reported heart attack at the age of 50 and screen icon and sex symbol Farrah Fawcett, famed for her role in Charlie's Angels, has also passed away following a long battle with cancer.

Sources at the UCLA Medical Centre said that the self-styled "King of Pop" did not come out of a coma and died after having stopped breathing by the time paramedics arrived on the scene.

Jackson's amazing career is widely acclaimed for revolutionising pop music with his hit albums Bad and Thriller, however his career and life were tainted with allegations of child abuse.

Jackson was set to perform a highly-anticipated 50-date "farewell" tour in London beginning next month, however fears for his health emerged after he postponed the first dates.

In the same day, Farrah Fawcett, screen icon and sex symbol of the 1970s lost her long battle with cancer. The stunning actress was admitted to a Los Angeles hospital earlier this week and her long-term partner, Ryan O'Neal reported that "After a long and brave battle with cancer, our beloved Farrah has passed away."

Fawcett was diagnosed with rectal cancer in 2006 and after surgery to remove the tumour she discovered the cancer had returned a year later. The cancer spread to her liver despite undergoing experimental treatment in Germany.

Fawcett has waged a very public battle with cancer and O'Neal, who has been her partner since 1982, has been a constant presence by her side. The pair announced earlier this week that they were to marry in a death bed ceremony.

O'Neal said in a statement following Fawcett's death, "Although this is an extremely difficult time for her family and friends, we take comfort in the beautiful times that we shared with Farrah over the years and the knowledge that her life brought joy to so many people around the world."

Born Ferrah Leni Fawcett in Corpus Christi, Texas, Fawcett was a multiple Golden Globe and Emmy Award nominee but rose to fame for her portrayal of private investigator Jill Munroe in the hit TV series Charlie's Angels in 1976. Her long blonde locks and bronzed, blue-eyed, all-American looks saw her rise as a pop culture figure whose hairstyle was emulated by millions of young women and whose poster sales broke records, making her an international sex symbol in the 1970s and 1980s.

Fawcett's story of her brave struggle with cancer was told in a documentary, Farah's Story, an acclaimed two-hour film telling of her brave fight against cancer. Farah's Story screened last May on the NBC network to an audience of nine-million viewers.

YOU FEATURED FARRAH FAWCETT AND MICHAEL JACKSON TOGETHER ON PAGE 163 OF THE MAY 1998 EDITION OF AWW AS "FACELIFT JUNKIES". IF WE ARE LOOKING FOR COINCIDENCES, DID THEY HAVE THE SAME PLASTIC SURGEON?
my heart broke, two of my favourites...grew up with michael jacksons songs like alot of fans out there...long live the king of pop. Farrah is one of the most beautiful and sexiest woman of her time. Totally loved Charlies Angels and a die hard fan. I would buy all the series if it came out on dvds.
King Of Pop June 26, 09, marks the day Michael Jackson died. This tragic news has flooded the world and fans have cried. For the loss of a superstar, gone before his time. He paid the price and walked the fine line. Judged by outside eyes, never left to be free. A confused young mind, not knowing who to be. This king of pop changed the music history. His life behind the mask left a mystery. He touched a nation, just by words of song. Did what he thought was best, even when perceived as wrong. He embraced each person, no matter black or white. Tried to gain world peace and stop all the fight. A young boy living through the eyes of a man. Helping those in need, with the reach of a helping hand. So, now we reminisce of a legend so great. We honour this icon, yet a little too late.
What a pity that the passing of the classy, courageous Farrah Fawcett was all but eclipsed by over-the-top, wall-to-wall news coverage of Michael Jackson's death later the same day. Farrah's long battle with cancer (recorded in a valuable, self-produced TV documentary) showed the grim realities of cancer and what a fearless fighter she was. Farrah deserved a final spotlight to herself rather than being relegated by circumstance to a media afterthought. I hope that your magazine, which covered her fame throughout the years, will devote more space to her legacy in the weeks ahead.
Many, many Generation Xers say goodbye to two vital performers from their childhood today - gone but not forgotten, Farrah and Michael brought us so much fun and joy. Thank you and farewell xx
i was driving to work this morning and was listening to the radio as i always do when i heard the announcement about Michael jacksons death. i am still in shock right now and still can't beleive it is true he will be sadly missed by everyone but he will also be remembered in our hearts forever through his music. R.I.P.
mmmmmmmm, let me see,a great talent of the music arena and know doubt a value for money entertainer but seriously has this person done anything above and beyound the call of duty to warrant the ridiculous amount of air time he has received and will im shore receive in the near future, i think not. take away his music and what have you got nothing but a baby dangling, child abuseing black man that wanted to be white who endulged in his grose glutony and had a ego god could not clime over...the list goes on and on.he is no professor obrein if you get my point.come on media....you must be more focused on how you fill you air time.
