Thérèse Rein is a different kind of PM’s spouse, with her own successful business and identity, but her roles as mother and supportive wife are what she treasures most, writes Michael Sheather.

First ladies of the world

Thérèse Rein is clearly a very different prime ministerial wife. Never before has the country’s leader been partnered by a woman as independent, energetic or determined as Thérèse Rein. She is a devoted mum who climbs mountains, a self-made multi-millionaire with a moral compass and a PM’s spouse with a purpose. It’s a role that she comes to with a vast array of experience as a mother, a daughter and a wife, and achievements as the founder of a successful business empire that today straddles the globe.

While Thérèse says she is only now beginning to find her feet as Australia’s First Lady, she believes that she can bring her own life experience to bear on a vaguely defined role and navigate a path that will ultimately make a difference to thousands of Australians, particularly the young, the disabled and the disadvantaged.

“There are no rules on how to conduct this job,” says Thérèse, who has three children, Jessica, now 25, married and living in China, Nicholas, 22 and studying law in Brisbane, and Marcus, 16, who is still at school and living at The Lodge in Canberra with his parents. “There’s no instruction manual. All I can do is bring the interests and concerns I’ve developed during a lifetime and those — the ones that are true to me — are the natural interests and concerns that come from being a mother. A lot of my interests are about families and supporting young mums, about inclusion and helping people back on their feet. That is true to me and who I am.”

Thérèse talks about Kevin
..."He was studying Chinese and that was unusual. He explained how he thought the next century would be the China century and that we needed people who understood her culture, history and language. I said, 'You should go into politics, we need people like you.'"

That chat preceded almost two years of intellectual jousting between the pair, reminiscent of the literary sparks that flew between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy.

"We disagreed on everything," recalls Thérèse. "It was on the best traditions of Jane Austen. Actually, it was very Pride and Prejudice. We would get into these heated debates about politics, philosophy, films, the meaning of life. And, eventually, he asked me out. We came from very different backgrounds and yet we were so similar.

Thanks to the factions(Unions) we as a country have lost a woman of substance, business acumen, ethics & moral values for a partner whose claim to fame is early morning ***-waves, lamb roasts & a nepotic position as an Advisor for Men's Health to the government, Wow what a lucky country we are.
I admire Therese Rein for the qualities that she possesses as an individual. Ms Rein does not rely on the glory of being the Prime Minister's wife - she is involved with issues that affect everyday Australians. She is compassionate and does not sit there without expression like previous leaders' wives who let their husbands do all the talking. Ms Rein takes as much pride in her marriage and long-term partnership with our PM as she does with being accessible to the people of Australia. She deserves our admiration and respect and I have no doubt she will continue her good work for the community.
No PM can be too rich or too hypocritical. At least he should be incorruptible. He bombards us with words and pretends to listen
Viva you are a twit!
I cannot believe the the comments from some people are we so jelous of succsesfull people that all we can do is try to put them down I take my hat of to both for standing up to be counted instead of idiots that hide behind a type writer to make comments to their face they would more then likely crawl on hands and knees just to have them say hello so more power to the Rudds.can you imagine the alternative no thanks.
To "Em" - "perceive"??? Isn't it "i" before "e" except after "c". Secondly - you think they (The Rudds) have an inflated idea of their own intellectuality, and model themselves on Mr Darcy & Ms Bennett? If they do, who cares? What I do know is that they appear to have morals and ethics, they seem to be a loving couple, loving parents and correct me if I'm wrong - interested in this whole country, not just a privileged few. But - I could be wrong and I've been fooled before. Personally I think you're annoyed because he seems to have an ego. I think if he didn't have one he wouldn't be where he is. And he'd be the first politician without an ego. What do you think? I think you're really scraping the bottom of the barrel trying to find something you don't like. You don't know when you're well off. He's gotten rid of "Work Choices(?*&^)", so if he does nothing more in his time of being PM he's already won the race
Tipical of Australians! Knock the tall poppies! Regardless if they deserve it or not. You would like it better if Therese was some bimbo, dressing up ad looking pretty, lending her image to a charity. You cannot stand successful people, can you ?
I think they are both really down to earth and lovable. He goes to the AFL footy and cheers like all of the other fans. She is more of a stunner now she has lost a few kilos. More power to them. I hope he get's another term to do more stuff for Australians, he is for us not against us. Well at least he expresses himslef. With the last leader it was hard to know what he thought as he never gave an off the cuff comment like kevin does.
How did she lose all that weight. What diet is she on? I'll buy shares in the company.
It's interesting that people feel inclined to comment (negatively) on subjects of which they have no knowledge, particularly Miss Leo (Melbourne) and Sue (Muswellbrook) If you want to voice an opinion you should go to the trouble of researching your facts a little before condeming anyone. Instead you show your ignorance not only in your comments but also in the fact you can't even spell the woman's name - even if it is written repeatedly throughout the article.
