"I wish I were further down the track before talking about it... There are ups and downs with every pregnancy and you don't want to go through these with everybody." — Sarah Murdoch

Thrilled to be expecting her third child, Sarah Murdoch talks to Lee Tulloch about motherhood and what it’s like to have married into a high-profile business dynasty. Untainted by power or fame, Sarah has remained her own person, working tirelessly for a raft of charities – and on a documentary series she finds moving and inspiring.

"Please don't let this be another story about Mrs Murdoch." The most accessible member of the Murdoch clan rolls her eyes and smiles to let me know she's not quite serious. "Marriage, motherhood – it's always that. I'd much rather be private about my life."

Sarah Murdoch is smiling because she knows there's a contradiction in what she asks. The former supermodel, Bonds underwear ambassador, Australia's Next Top Model host and tireless fundraiser for a slew of causes, from breast cancer to children's health, pops up everywhere these days: running on a treadmill in Sydney's Martin Place in the Foxtel Lap to raise money for the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, delivering a speech on a new breast cancer initiative at the National Press Club, sporting a big pink satin bow and a bigger grin on the red carpet at an Estée Lauder fundraiser, launching politician Tony Abbott’s book, Battlelines, before a savvy political crowd, and, from November 3, fronting a television series, Pride of Australia, that looks at the lives of 28 unsung Australian heroes, on Foxtel's Arena.

Try as she might to keep her public and private worlds separate, the two keep dovetailing. She might be reluctant to talk about her family, but sometimes there's no getting around it. For the past three months, she has been wearing caftans and baggy shirts to hide what is now obvious to everyone — she is expecting her third child.

Sarah, 37, and husband Lachlan, 38, are overjoyed that sons Kalan, five and Aidan, three, will have a new playmate, but Sarah is not looking forward to the scrutiny her growing baby bump is about to get. For the most part, she is feeling the vulnerability that most women feel early in their pregnancies.

"I wish I were further down the track before talking about it," she admits. "There are ups and downs with every pregnancy and you don't want to go through these with everybody."

Yet there was little chance it would go unnoticed. The cat was well and truly out of the bag a couple of weeks ago when she appeared at a Breast Cancer Foundation event in a purple satin dress, displaying a very defined curve in front.

The evolution of Sarah Murdoch

Nor can she go to ground and ride out the next few months away from public view. In the first months of the pregnancy, she had to forge on with the narration of Pride of Australia, while suffering awful bouts of morning sickness. "I was quite nauseous through the whole thing," she recalls.

Now that she's feeling better, she has her causes and Pride of Australia to promote, as well as preparation for the new season of Australia's Next Top Model, which will start filming in March. The newest Murdoch is due in April, so timing will be "tricky", she says. Trickier still is a bad case of "pregnancy brain", which, she says, gets worse with every baby. "I just walked into a wall!" she says, with a laugh.

Sarah is so beautiful on the outside because she is just as beautiful on the inside. She glows. She radiates honesty, compassion, dedication and simplicity. I think the Murdock family are extemely lucky to have her, but she is "our " Sarah too. A wonderful role model for young women to aspire to!
Sarah is a truly gorgeous person inside and out. A wonderful person who is a great Aussie asset. Money or lifestyle has not made Sarah the person she is. She was born like it. Lachlan has chosen wisely.
I think she looks so lovely.....a natural beauty. Pregnancy obviously agrees with her.
I think people are missing the point here, it illustrates just how much a photo is altered, i didn't recognise Sarah on the cover and I actually thought it was someone much older. Its a shame to see that we dont see the real beauty of a person because we are always exposed to someone else idea of an improved version. I'm the same as Sarah and please to say I don't have her level of sun damage to my face - having grown up on the coast. That's where the wrinkles forehead, crows feet and sun spots on her forehead come from. Not my idea of beautiful. I feel sorry for her to previously not have control over her true self in the media, but then she is married into a media family.
all mothers are terrific role models sarah is not different to any other mum out there except she married wealth
Well done Sarah!!!!!!!!!!! Finally a real woman!!!! Beautiful! I will buy more mags if I can see real woman on the covers.
Don't like the red lipstick on her. Looks a little Marilyn Monroe-ish, but she is a beautiful woman inside and out. Her works are inspiring and clearly she is a woman who is a devoted mother and wife and clarly likes it like that. She is real and not plastic which so many celebrities are. Good on you Sarah. I pray she has a smooth pregnancy, a healthy baby, an easy birth and a great life. What a positive role model you are. Keep up the good work and may others learn from you.
I don't normally buy WW but bought this issue because of Sarah Murdoch and the untouched photos. She is gorgeous. I haven't read the article yet but was dissapointed with the Editor's comments that it still bothered her to see imperfections that could be "fixed" - how sad is that (the editor's untouched photo looked pretty good too). I can almost accept that photos need to be photoshopped for a fashion shoot but not for every single article or photo that appears in a magazine. Magazines complain that readership is down but have they ever thought that part of the reason is that the average Australian woman may be sick of seeing photos of unrealistic, unachievable looks. Bring on real women!!
I too thought it was Melanie Griffiths but then realised their hair is almost the same and Melanie nearly always wears bright red lipstick which I'm not used to seeing Sarah wear. However in no way does she look as aged as Melanie Griffiths and I think the years have been wonderful to her. I think we are shocked to see crows feet etc unless it is in one of those photos of "stars without makeup" and they get them at their worse. I only wish more models and stars would do the "no touch" up photo shoots so all of us, especially this kids are not comparing themselves to some photoshop geek's ability!
I Love Her!!! Its soo good to see a successful famous woman who is not in the tabloids for sex tapes, sleezy photos, plastic surgery, drugs, drunken behaviour and diva tantrums....she is fantasic!!!!! A great mum and loving wife who is normal and down to earth!!! I have a lot of respect for Sarah as many do and have to say she doesn't need any touch ups!!! She is gorguz!!! Best of Luck to you!!!! Hope i look half as good as you when im pregnet and in my 30's.
