Penny Wong and her partner have welcomed a baby girl, just days after the finance minister led a campaign in favour of gay marriage.
Penny's partner Sophie Allouache gave birth to baby Alexandra at Adelaide's Women's and Children's Hospital on December 11.
Both mother and baby are healthy, despite Alexandra arriving nine days early.
Penny released a photo of her new family, along with a statement expressing her joy at becoming a mother.
"My partner and I are thrilled to welcome the arrival of our baby daughter Alexandra," Penny said in a statement.
"Our heartfelt thanks go to all the wonderful staff at the Women's and Children's Hospital, especially the Midwifery Group Practice.
"Like any family welcoming a new addition, we are looking forward to spending time at home together and ask for our privacy to be respected at this time."
Sophie became pregnant through IVF. She and Penny know the biological father of the baby, who will be known to Alexandra as she grows up. His name will not be released to the media.
Penny led a campaign to change Labour's policy on same-sex marriage at the ALP conference earlier this month.
She gave an emotional speech, in which she told other MPs that there was "nothing to fear from equality".
