Rugby legend: Girls know nothing about sport

Controversial rugby player David Campese has long since retired from rugby union, but he hasn't managed to stay out of trouble.

Campo is again in the spotlight after posting a sexist tweet aimed at a female journalist this morning.

The ex-Wallaby took to Twitter to express his outrage over the Sydney Morning Herald's appointment of journalist Georgina Robinson, who takes over Greg Growden's post as the paper's rugby union head writer.

"Why does the smh get a girl to write about rugby. Growden was a great jornio (sic) and now we have someone who has no idea about the game.!" he wrote.

While he was attacking the journo for not knowing what she was writing about, Campese clearly had no knowledge of his subject matter when composing the tweet.

Georgina Robinson knows a fair bit about sport, actually.

She is an experienced sports reporter currently reporting the Wallabies tour of Europe. Her editor Ian Fuge described Robinson as "a fine rugby reporter - already up there with the best".

Campese's tweet didn't go down well with the rugby community, with Wallaby David Pocock tweeting "Really sad to see journos attacked based on their gender." He also employed the #destroyingthejoint tag, a phrase women have reclaimed after Alan Jones' sexist comments aimed at the Prime Minister, which has also been attached to many tweets about Campese's comment since.

Fellow rugby legend Wendell Sailor also attacked his comments.

"Well good morning to u Campo & I have to say u are on ur own with this comment it's 2012 champ," he wrote.

Campese responded to criticism, indicating the tweet had been blown out of proportion by the press.

"Please relax and see the light side of life," he wrote.

"All press are the same."

Except for girls, of course, they don't get sport.

Campese's comments followed another sexist Twitter attack this morning in which Labor MP Steve Gibbons referred to deputy leader of the opposition Julie Bishop as a "bimbo".
