The still-youthful 40s

Wednesday, March 18, 2009

Buying jeans for your age and shape can be a dizzying experience. The Weekly's fashion team have road-tested the best styles to help you find the perfect pair despite your age and budget.

What suits your shape in your 40s?

"I like jeans to have a bit of a wider leg so my bottom doesn't look too big. Designer jeans usually don't work for me." Model, TV host and homewares designer Deborah Hutton, 46.

Tips for buying jeans for your 40s

Stay smart and sophisticated with classic denim styles worn with crisp white shirts, structured jackets, a kitten heel or flats.

DO

  • Wear mid-rise, boot-cut jeans. They're a universal classic that flatters most body shapes, especially pear-shaped and curvy figures. The slight flare at the bottom of the leg helps balance the body.

DON'T

  • Wear hipsters or low-rise jeans.

I am 47 years old and I live in country New South Wales. Right now I'm excited, because I've found something - jeans I love! I recently read about NYDJ (Not Your Daughter's Jeans) and bought myself a couple of pairs, and I absolutely love these jeans! Up until buying NYDJ I'd only ever bought chain store jeans, thinking they were the most affordable for me, and more importantly they seemed good quality. However I just love NYDJ, they fit so well, look so slimming and I honestly believe they are the best jeans I could by, in that they suit me so much! The only downside is that they aren't cheap, and some people may not be able to afford them. I paid $255 for one pair, and $299 for the second - a big splash out! Also, I don't consider myself short (5'6") however the NYDJ are a lilttle long so I've had to take them up 10-20 cm each leg. After wearing NYDJ, I know I could never go back to chain store jean
I'm 46 years old, size 14 (down from an 18, thank-you-very-much), and I am really annoyed with the push to have everyone wearing boot-cut jeans. I hate them - I hate how they look on me, and I hate that they make me look shorter. I like the long, lean leg look, and boot cut jeans do NOT "balance" an hourglass figure. They make it (me) look shorter and wider everywhere. I'm 5'11", and even though I'm working on losing weight, there is still a bit of junk in the trunk I'm trying to off-load. Boot cut jeans create a wide point at the bottom of my body that visually ties right in with the wideness at my hips. Overall effect-wide! NOT flattering! I find that a straight leg that is a little more relaxed (none of this "skinny jean" business) is a better, slimmer, cleaner and more classic, polished look than a boot cut jean. Thank you, Lee jeans, for finally making them available!! MWAH!
I'm a 41 year old, size 8 who loves wearing straight leg and bootleg jeans but I also wear skinny leg jeans (without the mid riff showing of course) and my 20 year old daughter is the one that convinced me to buy them. I was convinced that they were only for 20 year olds but I feel confident wearing them and don't look like mutton dressed up like lamb
