Question
I'm going to a couple of race days during the Spring Carnival this year, but really don't have the money to buy expensive dresses and hats that I will only wear occasionally. Can you suggest some places I could purchase inexpensive but stylish race wear?

Answer
Dear Janet,
With the credit crunch, clothing has really become a luxury item, and we're all looking for ways to make our purchases go a lot further than a couple of wears.
A good way to get the best mileage out of your race wear is to buy separates. Team a fabulous skirt with good quality basics such as a light summer knit, a pretty camisole with a matching cardigan or juxtapose the femininity of the skirt with a crisp shirt for a chic race wear look that will take you far further than trackside.
Try Witchery for good quality basic tops that won’t break the bank, keep an eye out for their White Shirt Campaign, 100% of the profits from these items go to further Ovarian Cancer research (www.witchery.com.au)
.
Add some more glamour to your tops with inexpensive silk flower brooches (that can be purchased from Lincraft from $4.99, 1800 640 107), or antique brooches that you may have at home, pin a couple to your lapel for a quirky touch, these items can alternatively be attached to breath new life into a hat.
If you don't have any head-wear try Portmans, 'Miss Jackson' for Portmans, is designed my Melissa Jackson a top Melbourne Milliner, these colourful fascinators and hats range from $19.95 to $69.95(www.portmans.com.au)
, so you can stock up on a couple for different race days.
Remember that now is the time to really consider what you purchase, and whether it's an investment piece that you will wear post Spring Carnival.
