Summer holiday packing help

AWW Fashion
Friday, December 4, 2009
Dear Fashion Team,
I am planning a summer break with my husband in January. With all the bag restrictions on flights these days, do you have any tips on what to pack for a summer getaway?

Carol, WA

Answer: Dear Carol,

Why is it some women look amazing on holiday, while the rest of us look more shabby than chic?

Frequent travelers always suggest planning what you pack before you actually try and fit it into your luggage. Laura Murray, a public relations consultant who travels 12 times a year for business says "I write down an outfit for each appointment – and that could be three to four daily – meetings, lunches, dinner with friends." But we think that the secret to packing is to remember the mantra 'less is more!'

Here is our check list of essentials to take on a Summer Getaway:

  1. Summer day dress
  2. Cotton t shirts (approx 3)
  3. button-up shirt
  4. denim skirt/jeans
  5. Shorts
  6. Light sweater
  7. Swimming costume & Sarong
  8. Sunglasses
  9. Hat
  10. Straw bag
  11. Espadrilles
  12. Flat sandals
  13. AND a great book

Other packing tips:

  • Always take a change of clothes and toiletries in your hand luggage in case your suitcase gets lost.
  • Try and fold garments in the plastic garment bags from the dry cleaners – this will save time in front of the ironing board at your destination.
  • Pack all liquid toiletries in zip lock plastic bags so avoid spills on clothes or in other areas of your suitcase.
  • Tie a ribbon to your bag so that it stands out on the carousel and you can hit the beach ASAP!

    Enjoy your break

I did a bus tour thru Europe, you'll love it or hate it. Me I loved it. I lived in sandshoes (80%) or comfy flats (19%) dressy (1%). Stick with packing mainly pants, I lived in them and roll your clothes, they don't wrinkle. Dressy pant or skirt with maybe 2 changes of top is all you'll need & a windcheater, it's a jumper and wind break all in 1. Take a travel clothes line - you can wash every 2nd or 3rd day. You don't have alot of time in 1 place, so small washes, often, dry better & easier to do. Most importantly take cold n flu tablets, cause 1 person in the bus gets it, then everyone gets it. They saved me. Where others were dragging, I was a ball of energy. Take ear plugs WITHOUT FAIL.
Well, I am on the receiving end!! I am about to go OS for the first time in June and would like to know what to pack for bus touring Europe please.
Take your favourite comfortable clothes only. If you don't wear it regularly at home you won't wear it on holidays. Take clothes that don't crush and don't need ironing when washed. Crinkle fabrics are great even in 100% cotton for coolness. And all of the comments in the article are also what I do and I travel a lot.
Always take a second pair of reading glasses (even if they are magnifiers from the service station or $2 shop) I broke my reading glasses in Italy and the cheapest magnifiers I could find were 35 euro. Needless to say I wore my one armed glasses the whole trip! Oh and bandaids, too. They were 7 euro for a pack of 12.
